Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

The Pensacola Ice Flyers began their 4-game road trip Tuesday night in Lafayette and beat the Louisiana IceGators 4-3. Special teams made the difference in this game tonight as 5 of the 7 goals scored in the game came either on the powerplay or on the penalty kill.

It took almost the entire first period before one of the teams got on the board. Former Ice Flyers' defenseman, Tyler Lyon, scored shorthanded for Louisiana 17:41 into the period. However, Pensacola would bounce right back less than a minute later with a 5-on-3 powerplay goal from Jordan Chong, with assists from Ryan Corry and Ryan Ramage.

Just a couple minutes into the middle frame, Tyler Soehner of the Ice Flyers made it 2-1 with a powerplay marker of his own, as Ryan Salvis and Matthew Robertson set him up. Chong and Mike Carter recorded helpers on their line mate Chris Wilson's goal that put their team up 3-1 near the half way point of the second. Louisiana fought back with a goal by Robert Short only 1:41 after Wilson's goal, and brought the score to 3-2, which is how the second ended.

Pensacola was penalized early in the third period but those 2 minutes did not eliminate the Ice Flyers' chances of scoring. First, Mike Carter broke away shorthanded but was denied by Louisiana's Dan Earles in net. Ryan Salvis then went on the attack. After a beautiful play to beat the last IceGator defenseman, he put the puck top corner, thus regaining the Ice Flyers' two-goal lead, 4-2. Louisiana's Short went back to work and closed the gap once again for the IceGators on a powerplay goal 11:11 into the third, making the score 4-3.

The Ice Flyers hung on to take the 2 points on the road in Louisiana and maintained sole possession of the 4th spot in the SPHL standings. Shots on goal were fairly even with the IceGators edging the Ice Flyers, 26-22. Louisiana's Robert Short was named the 1st star, Ice Flyer Chris Wilson the 2nd, with teammate Ryan Salvis getting the 3rd star nod.

Pensacola gets on the bus and heads up to Fayetteville, NC to faceoff Thursday night against the FireAntz for the first time this season. After that, they come back to Huntsville for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night to finish off their road trip.

As for Louisiana, they remain at home through the end of the weekend as the Mississippi Surge come to town Friday, and the Mississippi RiverKings visit them on Saturday.
