Mississippi Surge News Release
Adam Stuart had the game winning goal and Kiefer Smiley turned aside 27 of the 28 shots he faced lifting the Mississippi Surge to a 2-1 win over the Mississippi RiverKings on Tuesday night.
The win is the sixth in the last seven games for the Surge, which also posted its fifth straight road win.
Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn added to his team leading point total, opening the scoring at 12:17 of the first period. That was the only goal of the game until Stuart struck for the Surge at 17:26 of the third period, with what proved to be the game winning goal. It was only Matt Whitehead's goal with 49 seconds left that ruined Smiley's bid for his first professional shutout.
The win moves the Surge into fifth place in the SPHL standings. The Surge have the same number of points, but a higher winning percentage than Huntsville and Louisiana, the other teams that also have 35 points along with the Surge.
The Surge retun home on Thursday night to face the Columbus Cottonmouths.
