Special teams hinders Amarillo; Laredo wins 2-1

November 22, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX - In the fifth game of a six-game road trip, the Amarillo Gorillas fought hard against the Laredo Bucks, dropping their third straight game, 2-1.

Laredo got on the board in the first period with a power play goal by Rick Kozak, who took a feed from Jeff Bes in the slot and whipped a shot by Gorillas' netminder Mike Gorman. The goal would be the only one surrendered by Gorman in the first period, as he stopped 14 of 15 Bucks shots.

Entering the second period down 1-0, the Gorillas put Laredo on a quick power play to begin the second period when Gordon Bell was whistled for tripping at the 34-second mark. Just 15 seconds after the power play began for the Bucks, Darryl Smith batted a Kozak rebound out of mid-air and behind Gorman. Their second power play goal of the game gave the Bucks a 2-0 lead.

Joe Guenther answered with an even-strength goal eight minutes later, putting a Jason Weitzel feed into the twine behind Laredo starting goaltender Ryan Gibb. With the Gorillas within one, Gorman made save after save throughout the second and third period to keep Amarillo close.

Despite two third-period power plays (including one starting with just 3:38 left in the game), the Gorillas stuggled offensively. Ryan Gibb made eight third-period saves to solidify the victory for Laredo, 2-1.

Gorman (2-3-0) had arguably his finest outing of the season, making 33 saves on 35 Laredo shots. However, the Gorillas (4-10-0) power play went 0-for-6 in the game, with Laredo's two man-advantage goals proving the difference.

Amarillo's next game will take place on Wednesday, November 26 as they travel to Oklahoma City for a re-match with the Oklahoma City Blazers. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:10 PM Central Time, with the game being covered by 1010 AM ‘The Canyon' on radio, and the CHL Network online.
