
Bucks Go Bananas, Beat Gorillas 2-1

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Amarillo Gorillas 2-1 Saturday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks have now won five straight games, to improve their Southern Conference leading record to 10-4 (20pts).
Laredo benefitted from two power-play goals, as Rick Kozak and Darryl Smith each scored with the man advantage for the Bucks. Ryan Gibb won his third straight game in net, as he set aside 27 of 28 shots.
The Bucks (8-2 at home) would strike first as they scored on the power-play 11:16 into the first period. Rick Kozak scored his fifth goal of the season, as he rifled a shot from the high slot past Mike Gorman, off a pass from Jeff Bes. Bes picked up assist number 20 on the campaign. The Bucks have now scored first in 11 of their 14 games this season.
Laredo outshot Amarillo (4-10, 8pts) in the first 20 minutes 15-12.
The Bucks had a chance to go up 3-0 on the Gorillas with 10:23 left in the second period. Jason Dixon was awarded a penalty shot on Gorman, after being hooked in front of the Amarillo net. Dixon hit the post on his penalty shot attempt, keeping the score 2-0. Bes (3-21=24) picked up his second assist of the night, which gives him 21 on the year.
Amarillo would cut the Laredo lead in half to 2-1, 8:43 into the second. Jason Weitzel took a feed at the left side of the crase and stuffed the shot in past Ryan Gibb. The tally was Weitzel's team-leading seventh of the year for Amarillo.
The Bucks outshot the Gorillas for the second straight period, this time by a count of 11-8.
With the Bucks leading 2-1 late in the third, The Gorillas pulled Gorman for the final minute of the game to try and tie the game with an extra attacker. The Bucks defense would stand strong, clearing the puck out of their zone to end the game.
Gorman set aside 33 of 35 shots in net as he took the loss.
Smith was forced to the locker room in the third period when he was hit in the side of the head by a Kozak slap shot. Smith was bleeding from the ear as he was taken off. There is no word on his injury as of press time.
