Manchester Monarchs News Release
Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights over the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2, at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front of 7,700 fans on Wednesday night.
Manchester (33-17-2-4, 72 points) is in second place in the Atlantic Division. Omaha (24-24-2-7, 57 points) is in fourth place in the West Division.
Right wing Lauri Tukonen scored a power play goal at 12:54 of the second period. Defenseman Marty Wilford tossed the puck at the net as right wing Konstantin Pushkarev, left wing Jeff Tambellini and right wing Brad Smyth drove hard to the net. Tambellini got his stick on the puck but Knights goaltender Brent Krahn dropped to the ice to make the save. Tukonen picked the puck up at the top edge of the crease and tiptoed around the downed goaltender. With a wide-open net, Tukonen flipped the puck in for his 10th goal of the season.
Evening the tilt at 1-1, center Craig MacDonald flipped in a backhand past Monarchs goaltender Barry Brust at 1:50 of the final frame. On the power play, defenseman Mark Giordano sent a shot trickling past Brust and directly to MacDonald. Still moving from right to left, Brust narrowly missed the backhand that MacDonald sent sailing into the back of the net. Left wing David Moss assisted on MacDonald's fifth goal of the season.
Taking the lead at 11:47 of the third period, Moss taught everyone how to tip in the perfect shot with the Knights' second power play goal of the game. Defenseman Tim Hambly sent a blistering slap shot from the left point that Moss redirected past Brust for his 16th goal of the season. Giordano earned his second assist of the game on Moss' goal to give Omaha a 2-1 lead.
Brust (14-8-1) took his eighth loss of the season with 35 saves. Krahn (16-15-6) earned his 16th win of the season stopping 18 shots.
Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Omaha was 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
