Knights elude Monarchs, 2-1

Manchester, NH - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights scored two powerplay goals in the third period to slip past the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 on Wednesday night at Verizon Wireless Arena. The game-winner was scored by Dave Moss who now has goals in four straight games, tying a team season high.

The Knights played their third straight scoreless first period. It was not for a lack of trying. They outshot the Monarchs 14-8 in the first period.

The Knights had the shot advantage in the second period as well, but the Monarchs would capitalize for the only goal. Marty Wilford's shot from the point was tipped by Jeff Tambellini. Brent Krahn made the initial save, but Lauri Tukonen stuffed home the rebound for his tenth goal of the year.

Omaha tied the game early in the third period. With Manchester's Doug Nolan off for hooking, Mark Giordano stepped down the left wing and threw the puck in front. It ricocheted off goalie Barry Brust, and Craig MacDonald knocked in the rebound at 1:50.

On their second powerplay of the period, the Knights got the winner. Tim Hambly took a shot from the left point. Moss expertly redirected the puck past Brust's outstretched left pad for his 16th goal of the year and his team leading 14th powerplay goal. The 2-1 win gave the Knights a split of the two-game season series. The road team won each game.

The Knights are now 24-24-2-7. They have a day off before returning to the ice on Friday when they take on the Rochester Americans.
