Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Sacramento River Cats 6-5 in ten innings Monday afternoon in front of 3,460 fans at Security Service Field.
Cory Riordan made his first start of the year for the Sky Sox after being called up from Double-A Tulsa before the game. He pitched well in his Triple-A debut allowing three runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings while striking out four. The three runs came in the third on RBI singles by Adrian Cardenas and Josh Donaldson.
Mike Paulk would get the Sox on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. The Sox would take the lead in the seventh thanks to a four-run inning. Ryan Rohlinger singled in the Sox 2nd run and Jesus Merchan followed with a run scoring hit of his own to tie the game at three. Scott Beerer continued his hot hitting at the plate with a run scoring single. On the play, a throwing error by centerfielder Jermaine Mitchell allowed Merchan to score, giving the Sox a 5-3.
Another Tulsa call-up, Dustin Molleken, came in to pitch the ninth looking for his first Triple-A save. However, he was unable to hold the lead as Sacramento scored twice on a Miller double and a Joel Galarraga single.
Andrew Johnston (2-3, 8.29) tossed a scoreless tenth setting up a walk-off situation in the bottom of the inning. Matt Pagnozzi hit a double high off the left field wall against position player turned pitcher Wes Timmons to score Mike Paulk and send the fans home happy in the season finale.
The Sox finish the 2011 season with a record of 64-80 while Sacramento finished with a league-best record of 88-56.
The game marked the first extra-inning season finale in Sky Sox history.
