Iowa Cubs News Release
A crowd of 12,658 was at Principal Park Monday afternoon to see the Iowa Cubs (66-77) defeat the playoff-bound Omaha Storm Chasers (79-63) by a score of 7-2 in the final game of the 2011 season. It was the second largest crowd of the year, and put the Cubs over the 500,000 mark in attendance for the season.
In the fifth, Scott Moore tallied his second double of the game with one out for the Cubs. After a flyout, Omaha pitcher Wily Lebron walked Ryan Flaherty and Matt Spencer to load the bases for Marquez Smith. Smith lifted a high fly ball to center field that Lorenzo Cain appeared to lose at the last second and dropped to allow all three runners to score. It was the third error on a flyball in the game, and the second on Omaha. The error broke up a 2-2 tie, and put Iowa ahead 5-2. Chris Robinson followed with an RBI-double to drive in Smith and put the Cubs up 6-2.
The Cubs got on the board early when Brett Jackson connected with his sixth leadoff homer of the year in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, Flaherty reached with a windblown double and came in to score on a Robinson RBI-single to put Iowa in front 2-0 at the time.
The Storm Chasers tied the game with two runs in the top of the third inning. Cody Clark and Kurt Mertins reached base with singles, and David Lough followed with an RBI-single for the first Omaha run of the game. Clint Robinson collected his 100th RBI of the season when he connected on an RBI-single off Jay Jackson to tie the game at 2-2.
Jay Jackson (8-14), who has given the Cubs six straight quality starts, finished his season on a strong note by completing five innings on the afternoon. He allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out three.
Nick Struck pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout. Robert Coello pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Cubs and Blake Parker struck out the side to close the game in the ninth.
Lebron (1-1) took the loss for the Storm Chasers. He pitched one inning and allowed four runs (zero earned) on two hits. He walked two and struck out two. Starting pitcher Kevin Pucetas completed four innings and allowed two runs on five hits for Omaha.
Moore finished the game 2-for-4, reaching base in his 30th consecutive start for Iowa. Robinson went 2-for-4 as well with two RBI.
