Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Ind.) - In the first meeting of the season, the Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Evansville Otters 8-2 on Sunday night at Bosse Field.
Andy Wells made his debut for Evansville but allowed a run in the first inning to the reigning Frontier League Most Valuable Player, Joey Metropoulos. The designated hitter scored a run on a double as Southern Illinois led 1-0.
Ryan Bird started for the Miners and found himself in a jam in the bottom of the inning. Following a leadoff single, Jarred Ball broke for second as Brian Kolb struck out. The throw went to second base but ended up in center field as Ball hustled around to score. The play was ultimately ruled hitter's interference as both players were called out and an argument ensued as Otters hitting coach Neb Brown was ejected.
Southern Illinois regained the lead with a Brendan Akashian RBI single in the third inning and the Miners tacked on another run later in the fifth.
Down 3-1, Evansville tried to fight back against Ryan Bird who pitched seven strong innings.
The Miners scored three more runs in the seventh inning and added another two more on a Will Block home run in the 9th. Southern Illinois held on for the 8-2 victory.
Bird (1-0) earns the win after giving up just one run. Andy Wells (0-1) received the loss for allowing three runs in his four innings of work.
The Southern Illinois Miners are 44-14 following the win as the Evansville Otters are currently 19-38.
