Dempsey's Grand Night Helps Wild Things Power Past Cruisers

Washington, Pa. - Jacob Dempsey's fifth and sixth home runs of the season and a solid pitching performance by Justin Edwards helped the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, defeat the Oakland County Cruisers 8-2 Sunday night at CONSOL Energy Park.

The Wild Things' bats exploded in first in the bottom of the first. Michael Parker led off the inning with a single up the right field line and he scored on a John Delany single. Mark McGonigle walked and scored when Jon Kourie walked. The highlight of the inning came when Dempsey got a hold of an 0-2 pitch and drove it over the wall for a grand slam, to give the Wild Things a 6-0 lead.

Dempsey wasn't finished showcasing his power for the night. In the bottom of the fifth, he hammered a ball over the centerfield wall to give the Wild Things a 7-0 lead. Dempsey finished the night 4-4.

Oakland County ended the shutout in the top of the sixth when Bobby Andrews scored on a single by Jeremy Jones. Jones then scored on a single by Joash Brodin to make the score 7-2.

The Wild Things added one final run in the bottom of the eighth when Parker scored on a passed ball.

Edwards pitched gave up two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings. He walked two and struck out four for his third victory of the season.

Oakland County starter Kevin Asselin gave up seven runs on eight hits in 5 innings. He struck out four and walked two in the loss.

The Wild Things will continue the series against Oakland County at CONSOL Energy Park tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with pre-game coverage at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. The Wild Things will present a Salute to Mr. Rogers with a sweater drive benefiting Family Communications, Inc. All fans bringing a sweater to donate will receive free admission to the game. In addition, fans can check out Ladies Night on the party deck with $3 martinis and free massages available.
