Grizzlies fall to Miners

MARION, Ill.- The Southern Illinois Miners scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night and again in the 11th to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies 6-5 in the finale of a three-game series at Rent One Park. The Miners won the final two games of the series to win the series.

Stephen Head hit a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Miners (42-14) the win. Southern Illinois loaded the bases against Grizzlies reliever David Miller with an infield hit, a bunt single and a walk. Miller dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Trailing 5-4, Miners centerfielder Jereme Milons tied the game with his 10th home run of the year. The homer was the first allowed this year by Miller.

The Grizzlies (30-27) trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth before plating three runs in the inning to take a 5-4 lead. Matty Johnson tripled to even the drive home Jason Patton and Tyler Heil. Johnson scored on an RBI hit by Bobby Burk to put the Grizzlies up 5-4.

Johnson finished the game 1 for 4 with the two RBIs and a run. He walked twice. Patton was 1 for 5. Logan Parker was 1 for 5 with an RBI.

Tim Clubb started for the Grizzlies and tossed 6.1 innings. Clubb allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out three.

The Grizzlies continue their road trip Sunday in Normal, Ill. The Grizzlies will face the CornBelters in a three-game series, beginning Sunday night, at the Corn Crib. First pitch Sunday is 5:05 pm.
