Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi Hooks' infielder Jonny Ash singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning, as the South Division All-Stars came from behind to defeat the North, 5-4 in Tuesday's Texas League All-Star Game in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Springfield's Sean Danielson knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the tenth, putting the North up 4-3.
Tulsa's Ryan Mattheus couldn't hold the lead though, allowing all four hitters he faced in the bottom of the inning to reach, including a game-tying homer to San Antonio's Will Venable to open the inning. After Venable evened the game at 4-4, Mattheus walked Casey Benjamin of Frisco. Hook's first baseman Todd Self singled Benjamin to third, setting up Ash's game-winning hit. Ash was named Most Valuable Player, finishing 1-3.
All eight Cardinals that were elected to the game saw playing time. Juan Richardson, Bryan Anderson and Colby Rasmus all started, with all three players logging two at-bats. Rasmus was the only player to reach though, going 1-2 with a run scored. Danielson was 1-2 with an RBI and Jarrett Hoffpauir finished 0-2.
All three Springfield pitchers recorded one inning of scoreless relief. Mitchell Boggs and Jamie Garcia both allowed two hits in their scoreless frame, while Chris Perez worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
Steven Sharpe of Midland worked 1 1/3 innings to earn the win, despite allowing the go-ahead tenth-inning run.
Arkansas Travs' second baseman Adam Morrissey and Midland outfielder Richie Robnett also homered in the game.
Earlier in the evening, Frisco's German Duran out-homered everyone with 16 home runs, winning the Home Run Derby. Springfield's Juan Richardson was one of four finalists to compete.
Tuesday's All-Star Game can be seen on Wednesday night on Fox Sports Southwest at 7:00pm.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday night, taking on the Midland RockHounds in the opening game of a six-game road trip.
