Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals beat the Midland RockHounds for the first time this season, picking up a 6-3 win at Citibank Ballpark on Wednesday night in Midland.

Juan Richardson and Mark Hamilton both homered, as Springfield improves to 4-3 in the second half and 40-34 overall.

The teams were scoreless going into the fifth, as Richardson put the Cards on the board with their first grand slam of the year. With the bases loaded and two outs, Richardson lofted a pitch from Midland starter Trent Peterson (0-2) off the right-field foul pole, his 11th homer of the year, giving Springfield a 4-0 lead.

Cards' starter Cory Rauschenberger was dominating, taking a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning. Midland right fielder Richie Robnett broke up the no-hit bid with an infield single to lead off the fifth.

Rauschenberger ran into trouble in the sixth, as the RockHounds loaded the bases with just one out. Cards' reliever Matt Scherer entered and struck out the first man he faced, for the second out of the inning. Robnett put the Hounds on the board though, ripping a two-run single to right field, making it 4-2. Zack Zuercher came on and got Brant Colamarino to ground out to end the threat.

Midland got an unearned run against Jason Motte in the eighth, cutting Springfield's lead to a run at 4-3.

Hamilton came up huge in the ninth, crushing a Mike Bumatay offering over the right field wall. The two-run shot was Hamilton's first at the Double-A level, giving Springfield some cushion at 6-3.

Chris Perez walked a pair of RockHounds in the ninth, but got Vince Faison to ground out to Jarrett Hoffpauir to end the game, giving Perez his 20th save of the year.

Rauschenberger (6-4) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings.

The Redbirds look to make it three straight overall, sending Eric Haberer (4-4) to the mound on Thursday night. The RockHounds will throw Luis Ramirez (4-4). Game time from Midland is scheduled for 7:00pm.
