ALL-STAR FINISH - The story couldn't have been scripted any better. With over 8,500 fans chanting "Jonny, Jonny," Corpus Christi second baseman Jonny Ash drove home the game-winning run in the 10th inning as South edged North 5-4 in the 71st Texas League All-Star Game at Whataburger Field. Ash, whose heart-stopping heroics earned him MVP honors, was one of seven Hooks participating in this midsummer classic by the bay.
After tossing two perfect innings to open the game, right-hander Chance Douglass was recognized with Bank of America's Outstanding Pitching Award. Noochie Varner went 3-for-4 with a double and Todd Self finished the night 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the South offensively.
Frisco's German Duran won the Coastal Bend Chevy Dealers Home Run Derby by blasting 16 dingers. The 5-10, 185-pound infielder beat out Midland's Landon Powell, Juan Richardson of Springfield and Arkansas' Sean Rodriguez in the finals. Check out the game story at cchooks.com.
WAVE OF THE FUTURE - Hooks catcher J.R. Towles will be one of 50 MLB prospects and the lone Astros farmhand in the XM Satellite Futures Game, to be played at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Sunday, July 8.
