Colonel Propels Drillers
June 27, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Drillers lost five of six games to the Missions earlier this season, but after two months, Tulsa finally seized a measure of revenge by rallying to a 3-2 victory Wednesday night at Drillers Stadium in the first meeting of the second half between the two teams.
Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Christian Colonel hit a two-run homer to tie the game. Matt Macri then kept the inning going by doubling and scoring on Jordan Czarniecki sacrifice fly to give Tulsa the 3-2 lead.
Colonel now leads the Texas League in three offensive categories including hits, doubles and RBI's. Colonel has collected 13 RBI's and 10 extra base hits in his last ten games to lead the Drillers in almost every offensive category this season.
The tough luck season continues for Colorado's top pitching prospect, Franklin Morales (0-3). Morales threw five solid innings, allowing two runs and six hits while striking out three Missions hitters. Judd Songster (4-3) picked up the win by pitching two shutout relief innings, surrendering only one hit. Closer Steven Register picked up his league leading 25th save of the season by working a scoreless ninth inning.
San Antonio scored first with a run in the top of the fourth. Tim Brown singled and eventually scored on a broken-bat single. On the play, the ball and the head of the bat reached Corey Wimberly at the same time, with the ball bouncing off the bat and got by the second baseman to give the Missions the early 1-0 lead.
They added another run in the top of the fifth on a Cleveland RBI single that scored Nick Hundley, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Game two of Tulsa's three-game series with San Antonio will feature two premier prospects, according to Baseball America. The Drillers will send the Rockies' No. 17 prospect Sam Deduno (4-2, 3.77), while the Missions will counter with the Padres' No. 10 prospect in Cesar Ramos (5-7, 4.01 ERA). Game time on Thursday at Drillers Stadium is set for 7:05PM.
