South Atlantic League Announces 2009 Annual All-Star Team

St. Petersburg. Florida-Eric Krupa, President of the South Atlantic League, announced the selection of the 2009 Annual All-Star Team. The All-Star Team was voted on by the 16 South Atlantic League Teams' Field Managers, General Managers, Sports Writers and Broadcasters for a total of 64 votes.

The Annual All-Star Team was highlighted by the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Most Outstanding Major League Prospect and Most Valuable Player. Rudy Owens of the West Virginia Power was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Owens had a 10-1 record with a 1.70 ERA in 19 games before being promoted to Lynchburg in the Carolina League. Derek Norris, catcher for the Hagerstown Suns, was chosen as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Norris is batting .288 with 122 hits and 23 home runs in 121 games. Asheville catcher Jordan Pacheco was selected as the Most Valuable Player. Pacheco is currently batting .325 in 111 games, 428 at bats, with 139 Hits and 13 home runs.

Dusty Wathan of the Lakewood BlueClaws has been selected as Manager and Bob Kipper of the Greenville Drive was chosen to be the Coach of the 2009 Annual All-Star team. The Charleston RiverDogs led the league with three players named to the Annual All-Star Team. The RiverDogs representatives include David Phelps (right-handed pitcher), Corban Joseph (third base) and Melky Mesa (utility outfielder). The Asheville Tourists and Hagerstown Suns each placed two players on the team. Asheville's Jordan Pacheco (catcher and Most Valuable Player) and Scott Robinson (outfielder) are joined by Hagerstown's Stephen Lombardozzi (second base) and Derek Norris (designated hitter and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect). Augusta, Bowling Green, Delmarva, Hickory, Lakewood and West Virginia each had one representative on the All-Star Team. Augusta's Josh Mazzola (first base), Bowling Green's Tim Beckham (shortstop), Delmarva's Ronnie Welty (outfielder), Hickory's Erik Morrison (utility infielder), Lakewood's Anthony Gose (outfielder) and West Virginia's Rudy Owens (left-handed pitcher and Most Outstanding Pitcher) complete the All-Star lineup.
