Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds opened the month of May much like they closed April -- with a ninth-inning, game-ending home run to defeat Omaha.
One night after Kevin Orie gave Nashville a 2-1 victory with a ninth-inning blast, Steve Scarborough drove the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning over the wall in center field to give Nashville a dramatic 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Royals in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium.
The blast, Scarborough's co-team-leading fifth of the season, came against Omaha right-hander D.J. Carrasco and was the second game-ending roundtripper in the last three games for Nashville (14-10), which retained its one-game lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division with the victory.
Nashville erased a 4-1 deficit with four unanswered runs over the final four innings of play to post its sixth last at-bat victory of the season. Nine of the Sounds' 14 wins on the year have been of the come-from-behind variety.
The teams exchanged early runs scored via RBI groundouts. Sounds leftfielder Brad Nelson plated Dave Krynzel in the bottom of the first and Royals leftfielder Aaron Guiel answered by bringing home Justin Gemoll in the top of the second.
Omaha opened things up with a two-run third against Nashville starter Rick Helling. After the Royals loaded the bases with one out on a Jaime Jones double, Gemoll hit-by-pitch, and Alejandro Prieto walk, Guiel drove in his second run of the contest with a sacrifice fly caught in foul territory by Sounds second baseman Trent Durrington. Ex-Sound Adrian Brown followed with a two-out RBI single to right to make it a 3-1 game.
Guiel continued his productive afternoon in his next at-bat, ripping a sixth-inning Helling offering into the right field corner for an RBI double that scored Prieto and increased the Omaha lead to 4-1.
Nashville threatened in the bottom of the inning but were only able to plate one run after loading the bases with none out. Steve Scarborough doubled, Krynzel singled, and Matt Erickson drew a walk to fill the bags for Prince Fielder. The Nashville first baseman lined a shot to left which was fielded on one hop by Guiel, who proceeded to throw out Krynzel at third on the play and rob Fielder of the hit. Scarborough scored on the play to make it 4-2 but Omaha reliever Nate Field recovered to retire Nelson and Kevin Orie to escape the jam.
Veteran Sounds catcher Pat Borders made it a one-run game in the home half of the seventh, delivering an RBI single to right to bring in Corey Hart, who had opened the inning with a single and stolen base.
The Sounds knotted the contest with a two-out rally against Royals reliever Santiago Ramirez in the bottom of the eighth. Orie and Hart delivered back-to-back singles to right field before Ryan Knox pinch-ran for Orie at second base. The move proved to be an astute one as Knox flew around the bags to score the tying run one batter later on Durrington's RBI infield single.
Reliever Justin Lehr (2-1) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to earn the victory. The right-hander has not allowed a run over his last 11.0 innings of work, surrendering only three hits over that stretch. Carrasco (3-2) took the loss after his lone pitch of the ballgame resulted in Scarborough's game-ending homer.
The Sounds open an eight-game road trip on Monday in Des Moines, Iowa, with the first of a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park. Left-hander Andy Pratt (1-1, 8.04) takes the hill for Nashville in the 7:05 p.m. CDT series opener. He'll face Iowa southpaw Renyel Pinto (0-2, 9.42).
