Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â It was only fitting that on the major-league trading deadline, two pitchers obtained by the Pittsburgh Pirates in recent deals won both games of Thursday's doubleheader at Greer Stadium. Reliever Frank Brooks, acquired from Philadelphia in the Mike Williams deal, was the winning pitcher in the Sounds' 2-1 win in game one. Matt Bruback, who came from the Cubs organization in the Aramis Ramirez/Kenny Lofton deal, got the win as Nashville took game two, 1-0.
The wins for Brooks and Bruback were their firsts as members of the Sounds, and Nashville pulled out to a 5 ½ game lead over New Orleans in the PCL East Division with the twinbill sweep. Nashville notched only six cumulative hits on the evening but it proved more than enough.
In the opening game, the Sounds rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two solo blasts by John Barnes and Mike Gulan in the last of seventh inning to steal the game. Barnes hit a game-tying blast to left with one out before Gulan gave the Sounds their twelfth last at-bat victory of the year with a two-out shot to right. Both home runs were the 10th on the season for the players, placing them in a tie for second on the team.
Prior to the rally, Nashville was being one-hit by Albuquerque starter Justin Wayne. The lone hit came courtesy of a third-inning single by Sounds starter Pat Mahomes. Wayne (4-8) suffered the hard-luck loss despite throwing his second complete game of 2003. Mahomes, making only his second start this season, threw six strong innings, allowing just the one run while striking out four Isotopes, but took a no-decision. He has allowed only one run in both of his starts, covering 11 innings. Brooks (1-0) logged a perfect inning to pick up the win.
In the nightcap, the Sounds notched their league-leading 12th shutout. Bruback (7-9) limited the Isotopes to one hit in his six innings of work. Mark Corey pitched a scoreless top of the seventh, striking out the side, to earn his Pacific Coast League-leading 30th save. Mike Judd (4-9) suffered the loss despite allowing only two hits in his four innings of work.
The lone run Judd surrendered came in the last of the fourth. Tony Alvarez, who finished with two of Nashville's three hits in the nightcap, tripled off the base of the wall in center and Rob Mackowiak brought Alvarez plateward with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Sounds and Isotopes wrap up the series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Left-hander Dave Williams (4-2, 3.60) will take the ball for Nashville. He will be opposed by the Isotopes' righty Aaron Small (4-2, 4.14).
