Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Andrew Good pitched six strong innings Thursday night and Brian Bruney worked out of a jam in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the save as Tucson defeated Memphis 5-3 in front of 11,531 at Auto Zone Park.
Tucson snapped the Redbirds franchise record 13-game home winning streak after letting late leads slip away in the previous two games of the series. The Sidewinders also moved back above .500 (57-56) and clinched a winning road trip, improving to 8-5 on the 14-game trip.
Doug Devore put Tucson on the board first in the top of the second when he connected for a two-run homer off Jason Ryan.
Dee Haynes connected for a solo home run in the bottom of the second off Andrew Good to cut the Tucson lead to 2-1.
Billy Martin hammered a solo home run in the top of the fourth to push Tucson's lead to 3-1. The homer was Martin's tenth, making him the second Sidewinder to reach double figures in long balls.
Devore plated another run in the top of the sixth with a single scoring Lyle Overbay for a 4-1 Sidewinders advantage. Billy Martin doubled in Robby Hammock in the top of the eighth to push the lead to 5-1.
The Redbirds staged a rally in the bottom of the inning off Mike Koplove. Scott Seabol walked with two outs and scored on a home run by Jon Nunnally. Memphis put two more men on base before Brian Bruney struck out Jason Bowers to end the inning.
Bruney worked around a lead off single in the ninth to collect his seventh save of the season and make a winner out of Andrew Good for the second time. Good allowed just one run in 6.1 innings.
Tucson improved to 57-56. Tucson will finish its 14-game road trip Friday night in Memphis. The Sidewinders and Redbirds will finish the four-game series with a 5:05 p.m. start (Tucson time) at Auto Zone Park. The game will be tape delayed on AM 990 KTKT at 6:00 p.m. Chris Capuano (6-2 3.20) will start for the Sidewinders against Jeremy Cummings (3-1 5.23).
