Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Unable to get their groove going back at home, the Albuquerque Isotopes (14-13) fell victim to an 11-1 rout against the Nashville Sounds (18-7) in the series-opener Friday night at Isotopes Park. The Sounds came out as advertised with stellar pitching as starter Chris Waters (3-0) held the 'Topes to just one run while his offense assembled a hefty lead, two factors that combined sent Albuquerque to its fourth loss in the past five games.

Albuquerque was all-around flat on the night, committing a season-high four errors while also allowing the Sounds to jump out to a 10-0 lead after just three innings.

Waters coupled with the Isotopes recently dormant bats made for another contest in which Albuquerque struggled for hits, especially extra-base knocks. With two on the night, the 'Topes have produced just six extra-base hits over the past five games.

The Sounds jumped on 'Topes starter Josh Towers (2-3), who has been the rotation's most consistent and reliable hurler on the young season, using a three-run homer from Joe Koshansky in the first to grab a 3-0 advantage. After the Isotopes stranded two in the bottom of the frame, the Sounds capitalized on back-to-back errors to open the second inning, plus a Norris Hopper double, to produce three unearned runs and double their lead to 6-0.

Nashville would then bat around in the third, chasing Towers after two home runs, a solo from Trent Oeltjen and a two-runner from Luis Cruz made it 9-0. After notching two outs, Towers surrendered back-to-back singles to signal the end of his outing and give way to Brent Leach, who gave up a single to Koshansky, who fell a triple shy of the cycle while driving in five runs, to cap the Sounds inning at four runs and put them well ahead at 10-0.

After Waters allowed two more 'Topes baserunners to reach in the bottom of the third, the right-hander retired 10 straight while Nashville picked up another run in the fifth to make it 11-0. Waters would end up going eight innings, allowing seven hits and one run while striking out two to claim his third straight victory of the season against no defeats.

Albuquerque finally got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the seventh when Prentice Redman reached on an infield hit and came around to score on a Chin-lung Hu double, but from there Albuquerque remained silent to drop the first game of a series for the second time in a row.

Despite Towers' starting performance, the 'Topes bullpen continued its strong work, as four relievers combined for 6.1 innings of one-run ball after the Sounds' initial onslaught. Outfielder Timo Perez even authored a scoreless ninth to give the bullpen a much-needed break at the conclusion of the game.

Albuquerque will look to get back in the win column on Saturday behind right-hander Tim Corcoran (1-2, 7.20), who will take on Sounds lefty Chase Wright (2-0, 3.07) in a 7:05 PM start from Isotopes Park.

The Isotopes' short homestand against the Sounds rolls on with an Isotopes jersey giveaway on Saturday and a special Mother's Day Celebration in which fans can enjoy an all-you-can-eat brunch Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com .
