Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers took advantage of an early lead and a dominating performance from starter Steven Shell to cruise past Las Vegas 7-0 at Cheney Stadium on Friday.
The right-hander Shell silenced the 51s to just two hits over 6.1 scoreless innings en route to his first win in five starts this season. He ended the night walking two and fanning six.
Catcher Josh Bard was the catalyst behind much of the Rainiers production at the plate after going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI over the first and fourth innings. Third baseman Matt Tuiasosopo did his part too, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Rainiers wasted no time putting together some offense, beginning with first baseman Mike Carp's RBI-single to drive in Matt Tuiasosopo from second in the first inning. One batter later, Bard doubled to right to score Jack Hannahan and Carp and pave the way to an early 3-0 Tacoma lead.
The rest of the night went much the same way, with Tacoma notching one run in the second, fifth, sixth and eighth innings to take their advantage to a commanding seven runs. Bard recorded his second double to drive in one, while RBI from Tuiasosopo, Hannahan and Everidge rounded out the rest of the night's production.
Las Vegas right-hander Lance Broadway came away with the loss after surrendering five runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings, with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.
The Rainiers return to the field tomorrow when they host Salute to Armed Forces Night at Cheney Stadium, honoring past and present members of the military and their families. Tacoma will send left-hander Chris Seddon to the mound in the outing against Las Vegas right-hander Marty McCleary, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
