Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- Iowa third baseman Donny Leon hit a one-out RBI single in the top of the tenth inning to give the visiting Cubs a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds in the opener of a four-game series on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium.
The contest was Nashville's league-leading 10th extra-inning game of the season and ninth at home in 28 Greer Stadium outings.
Iowa loaded the bases with one out in the top of the tenth against Sounds reliever Chris Fussell. After Trenidad Hubbard flew out, Calvin Murray drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third when Russ Johnson's flyball was dropped by centerfielder Rich Thompson. Bill Selby was intentionally walked to load the bases for Leon, whose single on a 2-1 pitch from Fussell scored Murray with the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.
The Sounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Terry Shumpert reached on a one-out fielder's choice and scored from first one batter later on Luke Allen's RBI double into the left-field corner. Chris Truby followed with a run-scoring single up the middle, his team-leading 28th RBI of the year.
Nashville left-hander Frank Brooks performed admirably in a spot start, allowing just two hits and fanning three over five scoreless innings of work. He left with a 2-0 lead but ended up with a no-decision in his first start since July 2002.
Johnson put the I-Cubs on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out solo homer to left off Nashville reliever Hector Almonte, his fourth roundtripper of the year.
Iowa knotted the contest with a two-out score against Almonte an inning later, as the right-hander took a blown save in his first opportunity of the season. Josh Arteaga smacked a double to the wall in right-center to do the damage, bringing Brendan Harris home from first.
Cubs reliever Will Ohman (2-1) was awarded the victory after tossing a scoreless frame, while Fussell (0-2) was hit with the loss after surrendering the game-winning run in his lone inning of work. Jason Szuminski worked a scoreless tenth to pick up his third save.
The teams meet again on Wednesday afternoon in a noon matinee at Greer Stadium. Right-hander John VanBenschoten (1-6, 4.63) takes the hill for the Sounds looking for his second consecutive victory. He'll face Iowa right-hander Ricky Nolasco (0-2, 18.00).
