June 1, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

The Beavers scored 3 runs in 7th Monday Night to knock out Tucson 3-2. Starter RHP Lance Cormier (0-1) pitched 6 scoreless innings for the Sidewinders before the Beavers pounced on him for 3 in the 7th. It was Cormier's 2004 Sidewinder debut after being transferred from El Paso earlier in the day. RHP Alfredo Fernandez (0-0) also made his Portland debut, garnering a no decision, while pitching 4.2 innings with 2 runs on 4 hits. Reliever Mike Bumstead picked up the win, his first of the year, with 1.1 perfect innings.

The Beavers scored their 3 runs with a 2-run double by C Yamid Haad and later an RBI single by SS J.J. Furmaniak. Furmaniak's 2 hits placed him as only Beaver hitter with a multi-hit game. Closer RHP Bart Miadich came on in the ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season, leaving the bases loaded with Sidewinder runners when he got C Juan Brito to ground out to end the threat.

For Tucson, 1B/3B Alan Zinter went 2-4 with mammoth home run that left the entire stadium in right field. The bomb was his 5th home run of the year and the 247th of his minor league career. RF Noochie Varner continued his solid hitting streak with another 2-hit game. He now has 8 hits in his last 4 contests.

The loss dropped the Sidewinders to 28-23 while the win improved the Beavers to 25-27. Attendance was 3,305 and the game lasted 2:36. Tucson welcomes the Salt Lake Stingers tomorrow night for a 4-game series to wrap up the home stand. The Stingers are the Triple-A affiliate of the Anaheim Angels and game time will be 7:00 PM. Probables feature RHP Mike Brunet (1-4, 7.64) for Salt Lake facing RHP Phil Stockman (2-2, 6.07) for Tucson.
