Beavers come from behind to win third straight

June 1, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. - Yamid Haad had a two-run double and J.J. Furmaniak added the game-winning hit as the Beavers rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to win their third straight with a 3-2 victory over the Tucson Sidewinders Monday night.

Four Portland pitchers combined to hold Tucson, which had a season-high 19 hits on Sunday, to six hits, including starter Alfredo Fernandez, a 19-year-old who was summoned late Sunday night from the team's spring training headquarters in Peoria, Ariz. to make the spot start for the Beavers (25-27).

Mike Bumstead worked 1.1 innings for his first Triple-A victory. Despite some adventure, Bart Miadich held the Sidewinders in check in the ninth for his 11th save.

Blaine Neal worked the seventh and eighth innings to extend his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 13.

The Beavers trailed 2-0 entering the seventh, but Tagg Bozied was hit by a pitch and Jose Nieves followed with a single to right to set the table for Haad, who tied the game with his one-out double to right-center. Haad advanced to third on a groundout by Joe Gerber and Furmaniak's two-out single up the middle scored Haad with the winning run.

The win pulled the second-place Beavers to within four games of division-leading Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League North.

Fernandez, the 12th different starter in the once-predictable Portland rotation, gave up two runs in 4.1 innings of work in his first appearance above rookie ball.

Lance Cormier, making his first start of the season for Tucson, was the loser, giving up all three runs in 6.2 innings.

Tucson (28-23) built a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Keoni DeRenne in the second and a solo home run by Alan Zinter in the fourth.

The Sidewinders loaded the bases with two outs against Miadich in the bottom of the ninth, but Juan Brito bounced into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

The Beavers begin an eight-game homestand Tuesday night at PGE Park. Portland takes on Fresno in a four-game series and concludes the homestand with a four-game set with Tucson.

NOTES: The San Diego Padres optioned right-hander Brian Sweeney back to the Beavers on Monday. Sweeney did not appear in a game with the Padres after having his contract purchased on Thursday ... Fernandez was scheduled to return to Peoria after the game ... the Beavers won three of four over the Sidewinders for their first series victory since winning three of four against Edmonton, May 8-10 ... the Beavers defense went without an error for the second straight game ... Portland finished May at 15-15, its first non-losing month since April 2003 ... Freddy Guzman was 1-for-4 and has a hit in each of his first four games with the Beavers. He also stole his fourth base since joining the team and his 21st of the season ... the three-game win streak ties Portland's season high ... the Beavers are 5-10 in one-run games.
