Seattle Sounders FC News Release
Sounders FC Visits Dallas Midweek, then Returns Home to Host Salt Lake
Winners of four straight and unbeaten in an MLS-best five games, Seattle Sounders FC looks to continue the hot streak this week against two Western Conference powers. The Rave Green head south for a showdown with FC Dallas on Wednesday before returning to Seattle to host Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
Wednesday's match will be televised live on KONG 6/16, and Saturday's match will be shown on KING 5 as well as broadcast live out of market on ROOT Sports. Ross Fletcher and Kasey Keller will call the action, and Saturday's match can also be heard on 97.3 KIRO FM. Both matches can be heard in Spanish on La Gran D 99.3 FM.
With three wins in eight days last week, Seattle (6-1-1, 19 points) now holds the second-longest winning streak (four games) in MLS this season, and extended its unbeaten run to five games (4-0-1) - the longest active streak. The bump in points has helped Sounders FC remain among the league's elite as the club now leads MLS in points per match (2.375) and is the only team with just one loss this season.
The best start in franchise history rolls on as Sounders FC has reached 19 points in five fewer games than its previous best start in 2009.
Seattle took all six points last week to improve to 5-1-0 at home this season. The home stand began with a 2-nil victory over the LA Galaxy behind goals from Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero. Three days later, Sounders FC defeated the Philadelphia Union, 1-0, with a second-half winner from Mauro Rosales.
The top defense in MLS with just three goals allowed (0.38 goals against average), Sounders FC held two more teams scoreless to bring the season total to five shutouts in eight matches. Goalkeeper Bryan Meredith, 22, has begun his MLS career with 135 scoreless minutes.
Three games into a stretch of nine in 32 days, Sounders FC hopes to pile up the points. The seven MLS fixtures in May are the most league matches in a single month in club history.
The midweek visit to Texas presents Sounders FC with an opportunity to extend its MLS-best seven game (6-0-1) road unbeaten streak. Seattle is unbeaten (1-0-2) all-time at FC Dallas stadium with Rosales netting the winner in the previous visit. FC Dallas (3-3-3, 12 points) is unbeaten (3-0-2) at home this season.
Seattle will wrap up its second straight two-game week on Saturday night as Real Salt Lake (7-3-1, 22 points) comes to town. In a Western Conference semifinal rematch, Sounders FC will look to beat RSL at home for the first time since 2009. Salt Lake is currently atop the West with 22 points.
Sounders FC will finish out the month with three more MLS matches, including the lone home contest with the Columbus Crew on Wednesday, May 23, and two road trips to Vancouver (May 19) and Chivas USA (May 26).
An additional game will be added at the end of the month as Sounders FC will begin its run to a fourth straight Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The opponent and location of the third-round fixture are yet to be determined.
Tickets to home MLS matches are available through www.SoundersFC.com, all Ticketmaster Outlets, CenturyLink Field Box Office or by calling 877-MLS-GOAL.
Best in MLS? Seattle Squad Holds Top Mark over Past 34
With six wins and a draw through the first eight matches of the 2012 campaign, Sounders FC picked up right where it left off last season. Seattle holds the best record (21-6-7) in MLS over the past 34 regular season games with the best goal differential (plus-24) and the most goals scored (57).
Team Wins/Losses/Ties Pct. Goals For/Goals Against (Differential)
Seattle 21-6-7 0.721 57/33 (24)
Kansas City 19-5-10 0.706 50/26 (24)
Los Angeles 18-8-8 0.647 48/33 (15)
Salt Lake 16-11-7 0.574 49/42 (7)
Top Point: Sounders FC Leads MLS in Points Per Match
The stellar start continued last week as Seattle nearly doubled its season point total by taking all nine points available. The club has reached the 19-point mark in just eight games, five fewer than its best start in 2009 (20 points through 13 games). Last season, it took 14 matches for Seattle to reach the 19-point mark and in 2010 the club didn't break the 19-point barrier until the 18th match.
Seattle has remained amongst the league's elite this season, and following the weekend of results, the club leads MLS with 2.375 points per match.
Team Points Per Match
Seattle 2.375
Kansas City 2.33
San Jose 2.20
Real Salt Lake 2.00
Rave Green D: League-leaders with 0.38 Goals Against Average
Seattle held two more teams scoreless last week to bring its shutout total to five (second in MLS). Sounders FC leads the league with a 0.38 goals against average, allowing just three goals - two fewer than its nearest opponent. The club has allowed just one goal from open play this season (least in MLS), and two of the three goals allowed were crowned Goal of the Week, while the third came from the penalty spot. Seattle currently holds a 181-minute shutout streak and has not allowed a goal from the run of play in 658 minutes. Trailing for just 66 of 720 minutes this season, Seattle is protecting leads. The club has won an MLS-best 12 straight when scoring first, and is unbeaten in 19 matches (16-0-3) when netting the game's first goal.
The strength of Seattle's defense lies in its depth as coach Sigi Schmid has seven quality starters: Marc Burch (three starts), Leo Gonzalez (four), Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (five), Patrick Ianni (five), Adam Johansson (two), Jeff Parke (four) and Zach Scott (five). The backline has held opponents to just 21 shots on goal (second-fewest in MLS).
Home, Sweet Home: Sounders Improve to 5-1-0 on Home Turf
Sounders FC returned to the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field last week to defeat the LA Galaxy and Philadelphia Union, improving to 5-1-0 this season (6-1-0 across all competitions). Seattle is 29-11-13 at home all-time in MLS play with a plus-35 goal differential (83 goals for/48 goals against). The win over Philadelphia brought Seattle to an even 100 points at home since 2009 - the third-most in MLS (Real Salt Lake/118 and LA Galaxy/102). Sounders FC has averaged 1.57 goals per game at home, and have been held scoreless in Seattle just 14 times in 53 matches.
Back to the Road: Rave Green Win Away, too
Seattle has the opportunity to extend its MLS-best seven game (6-0-1) regular season road unbeaten streak this Wednesday at FC Dallas Stadium. Sounders FC went 9-3-5 away from home in 2011 - the best in MLS. Seattle's .676 road winning percentage last season was fourth-best in MLS history as the Rave Green scored a league-best 24 goals on the road. Seattle has earned the second-most road points (77) in MLS since 2009 (LA Galaxy/82).
Series Over: Seattle Wins Another Season Series
With the unbalanced schedule in 2012, Sounders FC has already won four season series against Eastern Conference opponents. Seattle has won the season series with Toronto FC, Houston Dynamo, Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union, and has tied the series with D.C. United. Seattle also holds a two-goal lead on LA Galaxy and a one-goal lead in the series with Colorado. Sounders FC trails San Jose by one goal, and has the opportunity to build leads against West foes Dallas and Salt Lake this week.
Seattle Skipper: Sigi Leads Club to 50th Win
Sounders FC earned its 50th MLS regular season victory last weekend with the 1-nil result against Philadelphia. The club reached the 50-win mark in 102 games (50-25-27) - seventh-fastest in league history (D.C. United and LA Galaxy reached 50 wins in 81 games), and the quickest since the Chicago Fire in 2000. Just six coaches have reached 50 wins with one club quicker than Schmid in Seattle, and Schmid himself did it in seven fewer games while with the LA Galaxy in 2002.
More Montero Magic: Fredy Follows Golazo with Winning Set-up Play
Fredy Montero reminded MLS of his quality last week with a Goal of the Year candidate against LA Galaxy, followed by a perfectly-weighted ball to set-up the winner against Philadelphia Union. Montero scored his first goal of the season in style as he sent a rocket into the top corner of Bill Gaudette's net form 35-yards out. Three days later, the crafty Colombian showed his excellent vision as he found the streaking Mauro Rosales in space for the winner. Montero also hit the crossbar with a tricky chip shot against Philadelphia, and his dangerous free kick against Chicago led to Eddie Johnson's winner.
Montero is the only player in MLS to rank in the top-10 in goals and assists each of the past three seasons. With 35 career goals, he is the league's fourth-leading goalscorer since 2009 (Chris Wondolowski/50 goals, Dwayne De Rosario/44 and Juan Pablo Angel/36).
Maestro Rosales: Creative Argentine Returns to Seattle Midfield
The reigning MLS Newcomer of the Year returned to Seattle's midfield last week after a knee injury sidelined him for the four of the first five games. Rosales started all three matches last week for a total of 207 minutes in eight days (he had previously played 79 minutes in the first five and a half weeks). Rosales served the winning assist to Eddie Johnson in the midweek matchup with the LA Galaxy and he capped off the vigorous stretch with the second-half winner against Philadelphia. Eight of Seattle's 11 goals this season have been scored in the four games that Rosales played, and the two scoreless outings came when Rosales was out.
Winning Ways: Eddie Nets Two Winners in Three Games
Seattle strikers were involved in all five goals scored last week, and U.S. international Eddie Johnson had an impact on four. Johnson opened his account with the winner at Chicago, and followed with the winner against the LA Galaxy, as he now ranks third in MLS with two game-winning goals. Johnson also ran onto Osvaldo Alonso's through ball to set-up David Estrada on the own goal in Chicago, and he chested Marc Burch's throw-in to the feet of Fredy Montero on Mauro Rosales' winner against Philadelphia. The production from the forwards is welcomed by Sounders FC as 38 of the team's 56 goals in 2011 were scored by midfielders and defenders. Johnson played 199 minutes in eight days last week.
Central Support: Seattle Strong in the Midfield
The link between Seattle's stingy backline and attacking strikers is the midfield group led by the tenacious Osvaldo Alonso. The only Sounders FC player to have played every minute this season, Alonso continues to lead the club in successful passes (376), tackles won (44), interceptions (38) and recoveries (93). Alonso's midfield partner is Brad Evans, the scorer of two goals across all competitions this season. Seattle is 13-1-5 in Evans' last 19 appearances (31-14-20 overall). The already young midfield got an injection of youth last Saturday as Andy Rose (22) made his debut, and Alex Caskey (23) started on the left. Rose bounced a header off the crossbar and Caskey nearly found the upper corner of the Brougham End nets with a long-range strike. The strong midfield will continue to improve as Uruguayan international Alvaro Fernandez is nearly fully recovered from a hamstring strain, and winger Steve Zakuani is in full training.
Keepin' Up: Gspurning & Ford Out, Meredith & Weber In
The recent hip injury to starting goalkeeper Michael Gspurning has spurred several developments with Seattle's netminding group. With Gspurning sidelined for two to three weeks, second-year keeper Bryan Meredith, 22, made his MLS debut last Wednesday versus the Galaxy and earned his first start and shutout three days later against Philadelphia. Andrew Weber has made a timely return from an ankle injury that kept him out for over three weeks as he was included in the 18-man gameday roster last Saturday. Saturday also marked the first time in club history that a backup keeper started due to injury to the starter. Meredith, 22, has started his MLS career with a 135-minute shutout streak.
In other goalkeeper news, Sounders FC announced last Friday that Josh Ford has been placed on the disabled list due to a right knee stress fracture. As a result, Ford, 24, will miss six matches and will be eligible to return to MLS play on June 16 at Montreal.
CenturyLink Field's New FieldTurf Surface Receives FIFA 2-Star Rating
The Seahawks and Sounders FC announced last week that the new FieldTurf Revolution surface installed in February at CenturyLink Field has received a FIFA 2-Star rating.
The FIFA certification process is conducted by an accredited laboratory and includes measurements to gauge shock absorption, foot stability, rotational resistance, linear friction and ball-to-surface interaction, among other items.
The FieldTurf Revolution system is built with the FieldTurf Revolution fiber and is the result of innovative science, engineering and technology that will provide a playing surface that features a soft and strong monofilament fiber. A proprietary fiber polymer formulation resists splitting and degradation and includes an industry leading ultraviolet inhibitor technology. A state-of-the-art extrusion process provides intricate concave and ridged construction to eliminate breaking points in each fiber blade.
Specially sized cryogenic rubber particles and washed silica sand granules are layered, in a patented installation process, surrounding the FieldTurf Revolution fibers. This provides player safety and outstanding durability and longevity. The FieldTurf system is the only turf product in the world with independent long-term and real-life safety data backing up its claims.
The two organizations have a long history with FieldTurf. In 2000, when the Seahawks played at the University of Washington's Husky Stadium, they became the first NFL team to play their home games on FieldTurf. The partnership continued at the Seahawks Stadium, now CenturyLink Field, and at the team training facilities. When the administration saw the FieldTurf Revolution product, it made sense to upgrade to the very best turf technology in the industry.

FC Dallas Series Notes
Sounders FC travels to Frisco, Texas, to take on FC Dallas Wednesday evening at FC Dallas Stadium. Seattle looks to stay unbeaten on the road (1-0-2) against FC Dallas and win their third straight overall across all-competitions.
Seattle has had success against Dallas, going 2-1-3 in MLS play. However, none of those games have been decided by more than one goal, and Sounders FC has outscored Dallas just 7-6. In their last MLS meeting on August 20 of last season, a Mauro Rosales goal in the 16th minute was the difference in a 1-0 win for the Rave Green in Frisco. Break Shea provided the winner in a 1-0 Dallas win at CenturyLink Field earlier in 2011. Fredy Montero leads all players in the series with six points (two goals, two assists).
Seattle and Dallas have met just once outside of MLS play. On August 30, 2011, just ten days after their last MLS meeting, Sounders FC came out on top 1-0 in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup Semifinal. In a game held at Starfire Sports Complex, Montero broke the scoreless tie with the game-winner in the 78th minute.
Dallas Notables
Coach Schellas Hyndman's 4-4-2 attack is led by U.S. international Brek Shea and Panamanian international Blas Perez. Perez will be unavailable for Wednesday's match after receiving a red card last Sunday against Colorado. Daniel Hernandez also received a red card in the match and will miss Wednesday's meeting, as well. Shea and Perez have three goals apiece, and Perez has added a team-high three assists. Shea led Dallas with 11 goals last season, including the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field last season. Brazilian midfielder Ricardo Villar has scored two goals in just five games this season.
The back line is anchored by Ugo Ihemelu, who plays alongside University of Washington-product George John at center back. Ihemelu (one goal) and right back Zach Lloyd (one goal, one assist) have both contributed offensively while playing every minute so far this season.
FCD/SEA Connections
Sigi Schmid coached goalkeeper Kevin Hartman at UCLA. They were together again with the L.A. Galaxy, winning the 2001 U.S Open Cup and the 2002 MLS Cup. Dallas defender George John is from Shoreline, Washington, and played for the University of Washington. Eddie Johnson began his career with Dallas, playing five seasons before joining Kansas City. Johnson, who played his first MLS match at age 17, had 24 goals and six assists with Dallas. Servando Carrasco (2007-10) was also a Golden Bear alongside Dallas' Andrew Wiedeman (2007-09).
Real Salt Lake Series Notes
Saturday's match against Real Salt Lake (7-3-1, 22 points) marks the first meeting between the two sides since Salt Lake advanced past Seattle in the Western Conference semifinals last season, 3-2 on aggregate. Seattle fell behind 3-nil in the first leg at Salt Lake and, despite a late two-goal surge in the second-half of the second leg, Seattle was unable to overcome the deficit.
Sounders FC is 3-3-2 against Salt Lake, including playoffs. One of Seattle's most memorable wins was a 2-1 road victory at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 28, 2011, snapping Salt Lake's MLS record 29-game home unbeaten streak. In the return match in Seattle, the Rave Green fell, 2-1, after each squad saw a player ejected.
The last home win in the regular season series came in the inaugural season when Nate Jaqua and Fredy Montero scored to lead Seattle to a 2-nil victory on March 28, 2009. Montero has two goals and two assists in the six regular season meetings, and Osvaldo Alonso has scored once with three assists in four home games against Salt Lake, including playoffs.
Salt Lake Notables
Coach Jason Kreis commands a deep, veteran club that is tied for first in MLS with 22 points, ranks fourth with 18 goals scored, and has seen goals from eight different players this season. Forward Alvaro Saborio leads the way with four goals and an assist, including a brace on Saturday in a 2-1 win over New England. Fabian Espindola and Kyle Beckerman each have three goals and an assist this season, while Jonny Steele (two goals, one assist) and Javier Morales (one goal, three assists) have also contributed.
Defensively, RSL has five players with five or more starts, four of whom--Jamison Olave, Chris Wingert, Tony Beltran and Nat Borchers--have been with the club for four years or more (Chris Schuler joined the club in 2010). Goalkeeper Nick Rimando has a 1.09 goals against average and leads MLS with 36 saves.
The RSL Connection
Seattle striker Eddie Johnson and Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis played together for four seasons (2001-2004) with the Dallas Burn. Both Leo Gonzalez and Alvaro Saborio began playing for the Costa Rica National Team in 2002. Saborio played for Gonzalez's rival club, Saprissa, for five seasons. Seattle's Mauro Rosales and Salt Lake's Javier Morales and Fabian Espindola are from Argentina. Sigi Schmid coached midfielder Ned Grabavoy for one season at Los Angeles (2004). David Estrada and Tony Beltran played at UCLA together from 2006-07.
Recap: Seattle Sounders FC 1 vs. Philadelphia Union 0 - May 5, 2012
Mauro Rosales scored his first goal of the season as Sounders FC shut out Philadelphia Union, 1-0, in front of a sellout crowd of 38,399 on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. Fredy Montero registered his first assist of the season and Bryan Meredith notched his first career shutout as Seattle won its fourth straight match.
The game's lone goal came in the 63rd minute and started with a throw-in that Eddie Johnson chested to Montero. Montero touched it twice, then played the ball to a wide-open Rosales on the right side of the box, who fired a hard, low shot inside the far post.
Rosales and Montero have registered a point (assist, goal) in consecutive games.
Seattle is now 5-1-0 at home in MLS play this season (6-1-0 across all competitions). Seattle now has five shutouts in eight games this season, and has held opponents to just one goal in the last five games.
Sounders FC continued its unbeaten run (4-0-1) against the Eastern Conference in 2012.
It was the first career start for Meredith, who came on at half for Michael Gspurning Wednesday night. The 22-year-old keeper only had to make one save, but punched away multiple crosses, including a dangerous pass near the goal just before the final whistle.
Midfielder Andy Rose made his MLS debut as he started at center-mid alongside Osvaldo Alonso. The 2012 Supplemental Draft pick out of UCLA nearly scored in the 47th minute when Rosales found him on a corner kick, but his header hit the crossbar.
Coach Sigi Schmid has now used 21 different starters this season.
This was the first win for the Rave Green against Philadelphia since a 2-0 home victory in the Union's inaugural game on March 25, 2010.
Sounders FC entered the game with a league-low 71 shots this season, and allowed just six today. This marks the second straight game they have held their opponent to just one shot on goal.
Before combining for a goal in the second half, the Rosales and Montero combination created several scoring opportunities. In the seventh minute, Rosales found Jeff Parke with a corner kick, who headed the ball to Montero, but his strike was cleared in the goal's mouth by a Union defender.
In the 19th minute, good build-up play led to an Adam Johansson cross that found Montero for a clean header, but his attempt was saved by Zac MacMath.
In the 59th minute, Rosales found Montero on the left side of the box, but the Colombian's bending shot went wide of the far post.
Then, in the 88th minute, Montero found himself wide open from 20-yards and chipped a shot up and over the keeper, but hit the crossbar.
Midfielder Alex Caskey made his second career start and let loose a couple of dangerous shots from distance. In the 26th minute he rifled a shot from 25-yards out that just missed wide right, and in the 42nd minute he let unleashed another strike from 20-25-yards that MacMath punched away.
Sounders FC hope to extend its MLS-best seven game road unbeaten streak (6-0-1) as the Rave Green visit FC Dallas on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. PT. The next home match is on Saturday, May 12 against Real Salt Lake on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
Academy Update
Sounders FC Academy came away with a loss and draw as they traveled to Arizona this weekend to take on RSL Arizona in a non-divisional matchup. The U18's were downed, 4-1, and a late RSL goal forced a 2-2 draw against the U16's.
Austin Sweeney scored the equalizer before halftime for the U18's (9-11-3, 7-5-1, 22 points NW Division) but they conceded three second-half goals in the 4-1 loss. The U16's (15-5-3, 10-2-1, 31 points NW Division) fell behind 1-0 early in the second half, but a David Olsen equalized on a cross from Kyle Bjornethun and Duncan McCormick gave the squad a 2-1 lead after a scrum following a corner kick. The 2-1 lead remained until the final moments when RSL equalized for a 2-2 draw.
The teams return to Seattle this week for their final home games of the season next weekend against the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA at Starfire Sports.
Throw-ins
Defender Marc Burch celebrates his 28th birthday today, Monday, May 7...The Sounders U23's begin their season this Friday against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. The U23's play again on Saturday against the Victoria Highlanders at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.
