Published on May 7, 2012 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Monday, May 7, 2012) San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 9 of the 2012 MLS season. Wondolowski scored two goals on Wednesday in a 5-3 victory over D.C. United and another on Saturday against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Wondolowski's first goal of the week gave San Jose a 2-1 lead in the 21st minute of Wednesday's match at home against D.C. United. The forward received a short pass from Simon Dawkins in the area and placed a left-footed shot into the corner of the net. His second of the match came in the 69th, a headed finish on a Steven Beitashour cross that put the Earthquakes up 4-2. The two-goal performance was his third multi-goal game of the season, and ninth of his career.
With another header on Saturday, Wondolowski scored San Jose's lone goal in the 2-1 loss to Vancouver on the road at BC Place.
Wondolowski has scored 11 goals this season, placing him atop the 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot standings.
This week's honor is his third career Player of the Week award.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
