Sounders FC Falls 1-0 on the Road to Sporting Kansas City
October 2, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - Sounders FC (12-17-4, 40 points) fell 1-0 on the road to Sporting Kansas City (11-15-7, 40 points) on Sunday afternoon at Children's Mercy Park. With the loss, Seattle is eliminated from contention from the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, snapping the club's league-record 13-year postseason streak.
The home side broke the scoreless deadlock in the 41st minute, with William Agada converting in front of goal on a cross from Dániel Sallói. This marks the first time Sounders FC has failed to qualify for the postseason since joining MLS in 2009. The 13-year run was the second-longest active streak across the five major men's professional sports league, behind only the Pittsburgh Penguins' current streak of 16 seasons in the NHL.
Brian Schmetzer's side now returns home for the final match of the regular season, a matchup with the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, October 9 at Lumen Field (2:00 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, Univision-Seattle, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360 AM).
MATCH NOTES
With the loss, Sounders FC has been eliminated from contention for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, failing to qualify for the first time since joining MLS in 2009. The club's 13-year run was the second-longest active streak across the five major men's professional sports leagues, behind only the Pittsburgh Penguins' current streak of 16 seasons (NHL).
Today's matchup marked the 26th all-time MLS meeting between Sounders FC and Sporting Kansas City sides (including postseason play), with Seattle holding a 12-10-4 advantage in the series.
Cristian Roldan returned to the starting XI on Sunday, his first start since August 14. The midfielder had groin surgery last month and made his return to the pitch on Tuesday vs. FC Cincinnati as a substitute.
Forward Raúl Ruidíaz remained in Seattle after suffering an ankle sprain while on international duty with Peru. Jordan Morris got the nod up top today after returning from international duty with the United States. Seattle's three other players that were away on senior international duty (Xavier Arreaga, Nouhou and Alex Roldan) were also back in the starting XI.
