HOUSTON, TX - The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, improved their record on the current six-game road trip to 2-1 with a 4-1 win over the Houston Aeros Thursday in their first-ever meeting with the club from Texas. Goaltender Steve Valiquette made 36 saves while Trent Hunter and Eric Manlow assisted on two goals apiece in the win.
The Sound Tigers took a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period "first" goals.
Ray Schultz opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 11:17 with the teams skating at four-on-four strength on assists from Manlow and Hunter. Jeremy Adduono doubled the lead with his first goal of the year at 15:41 on assists from Hunter and Manlow. Both players scored on rebounds while driving to the net.
The Sound Tigers upped their lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal by Konstantin Kalmikov, his fifth goal of the season, at 14:15 of the second period, but Houston pulled back to within 3-1 on Kyle Wanvig's ninth goal of the year on assists from Cory Larose and Travis Roche with 18.4 seconds left in the middle period.
Houston pulled Goaltender Derek Gustafson in favor of an extra attacker with just over two minutes left in the game but could not score as Raffi Torres sealed the win by scoring his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, into the empty net with 3.4 seconds left to play.
The Sound Tigers were 0 for 2 on the power play, 3 for 3 on the penalty kill and won despite being outshot 37-26. Valiquette was named the game's number one star, Hunter number two and Manlow number three.
