Sound Tigers Weekly Report

February 9, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release

THE WEEK THAT WAS ‚¬Â¦ The Sound Tigers played two games this past week against Atlantic Division rivals as they returned from the All-Star Break. The Sound Tigers were stymied by great goaltending on Friday night and were done in by a couple power play goals on Saturday as they finished the weekend 0-2.

WHALE 3, SOUND TIGERS 2 ‚¬Â¦ The Sound Tigers faced the Connecticut Whale in their first game back from the All-Star Break on Friday night. All-Star forward Jeremy Williams scored 3:22 into the game to put the Whale in front, and Chad Johnson was on his game early as he made point blank saves on Olivier Labelle, Brandon Svendsen and Justin DiBenedetto in the opening period to preserve that lead. DiBenedetto would exact revenge with his 10th goal of the season via the power play at 6:07 of the second to tie the game. A controversial goal put the Whale back in front. After Koskinen made a fantastic save on Evgeny Grachev, Grachev's skate hit Koskinen in the head as he fell down. Koskinen was down on the ice, referee Chris Brown elected not to blow the whistle and it was a costly choice for the Sound Tigers. As Koskinen slowly made his way to his feet, Jyri Niemi blasted a shot from the point into the mostly open net. The Sound Tigers goalie slammed his helmet to the ice in anger but the call stood and the Whale led 2-1 at 7:02. The Whale increased its lead to two on Kris Newbury's goal at 11:20 of the period and the Sound Tigers trailed 3=2D1 headed to the third. Wes O'Neill knocked the rebound from Brady Leisenring's shot past Johnson with 6:56 left in regulation to cut the deficit to one, but Johnson continued to make big saves down the stretch and the Sound Tigers fell 3-2.

FALCONS 4, SOUND TIGERS 1 ‚¬Â¦ Joel Martin got his first start in front of a home crowd on Saturday as the Sound Tigers hosted the Springfield Falcons at Webster Bank Arena. The Sound Tigers dominated the play early and led the shot total 11-0 midway through the first period, and also led 1-0 on the scoreboard when Justin DiBenedetto netted his seventh goal in seven games on a one-timer 2:46 into the game. Springfield answered when Chris D'Alvise beat Martin to even the score at one with 46 seconds left in the first period. The Falcons increased the lead to two on a wraparound by Maksim Mayorov late in the second period, and pulled away in the third with goals from Kyle Wilson and Tomas Kubalik as the visitors defeated the Sound Tigers 4-1.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK ‚¬" JUSTIN DiBENEDETTO ‚¬Â¦

Sound Tigers forward Justin DiBenedetto earns Sound Tigers Player of the Week honors for the second straight week. The Mississauga, Ont. native continued his solid play over the last few weeks netting two goals in two games and now has seven goals in the last seven contests. DiBenedetto is now tied for third on the Sound Tigers in goals (10) behind Micheal Haley (12) and Robin Figren (11).

KOSKINEN AND MARTIN RECALLED ‚¬Â¦

Rookie goaltender Mikko Koskinen was recalled by the Islanders this past Saturday morning and Joel Martin was recalled on Tuesday evening. Koskinen earned his first call-up following an injury suffered by Rick DiPietro earlier in the week. Martin's first NHL call-up came unexpectedly when Kevin Poulin dislocated his knee cap in warmups for the Islanders game Tuesday night, and Martin made his way down to Long Island to backup Koskinen who made his NHL debut following Poulin's injury. Koskinen suffered a 5-3 loss to Toronto on Tuesday and is expected to start Thursday night in Montreal with Martin serving as his backup.

SOUND TIGERS FEB. 8 GAME RESCHEDULED FOR FEB 16 ‚¬Â¦

In conjunction with the Springfield Falcons and the American Hockey League, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced today that their game originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in Springfield has been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 16, 2011 starting at 7 p.m. at the MassMutual Center. The game has been rescheduled to allow crews time to remove snow and ice from the MassMutual Center roof and surrounding area. The rescheduled date also gives MassMutual Center crews more time to completely execute the change over from the Disney on Ice Show that occupied the venue this week back to the original ice skating surface.
