Kane Gives Bears Edge Over Monarchs Wednesday
February 9, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY kicked off a four games in five night stretch Wednesday night, slipping by the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 in a shootout at Verizon Wireless Arena.
Patrick McNeill opened the scoring in the first period at the 7:56 mark, when he tipped a Boyd Kane pass through Manchester goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. Keith Aucoin also assisted on the goal to give HERSHEY a 1-0 lead after one. Manchester's Bud Holloway scored his 17th of the season at 16:19 of the second period, a shot scooped past HERSHEY backstop Todd Ford. The two teams went to second intermission all tied at one.
The third period featured scoring chances for both sides, but neither side was able to gain the advantage. The Monarchs would threaten in overtime with a power play opportunity, but Ford and the defense again stood tall. Into the shootout, only Kane was able to score among 10 different shooters for both teams. Kane's goal in the fifth and deciding round gave HERSHEY a road win, and points in 10 straight games. Ford's win was his third in his last four games since Braden Holtby was injured January 29 vs. Charlotte.
BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game:
1. Boyd Kane (Assist in regulation, scored SO winner)
2. Bud Holloway (Scored MCH's only goal)
3. Patrick McNeill (Scored HSY'S goal in regulation)
Notes: HERSHEY continues its current four games in five nights stretch Friday with a game in Providence against the Bruins. Faceoff at Dunkin Donuts Center is at 7:00 p.m. Andrew Gordon, Andrew Joudrey and Braden Holtby were among HERSHEY'S injured players Wednesday. The BEARS scratched 10 players for Wednesday's game, most due to injury. The Washington Capitals assigned Jay Beagle to HERSHEY on Tuesday. Beagle's game for the BEARS was his first since December 12.
