Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, set a pair of franchise records in a 4-1 home win over the Norfolk Admirals Saturday.
The Sound Tigers opened the game with two goals on their first two shots.
Justin Mapletoft scored 14 seconds in for his seventh goal of the season setting a Sound Tiger record for the fastest goal at the start of a game. Mapletoft also set the team record for fastest goal at the start of a period when he tallied just nine seconds into the second period of game three of the 2002 Eastern Conference Finals, which the Sound Tigers lost 4-2 on the road to the Hamilton Bulldogs on May 15, 2002. Eric Godard and Sean Bergenheim assisted on Saturday's first goal.
Just 1:17 later, Justin Papineau blasted a slapshot past Norfolk goaltender Adam Munro for his tenth goal of the season off assists from Richard Seeley and Rob Collins upping the lead 2-0. Munro was then pulled in favor of Michael Leighton but returned 2:04 later after Leighton stopped the only shot he faced.
Mapletoft notched his second goal of the game and eighth of the season off assists from Cole Jarrett and John Morlang at the 15:13 mark to make it 3-0 Sound Tigers.
The Admirals cut the lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal by Matt Keith, his 13th goal of the season, off assists from Marty Wilford and Pavel Vorobiev at 7:10 of the middle frame.
Just ten seconds after leaving the penalty box, Seeley one-timed a Bergenheim feed for his second goal of the season to finsh the scoring at 4-1. Ed Campbell also assisted on the play with 6:13 left in the game.
Sound Tiger netminder Dieter Kochan broke his own franchise record for most saves in a game with 49 to earn the first star. Mapletoft was the second star with two goals and Seeley was the third with a goal and an assist.
Norfolk outshot the Sound Tigers 50-20. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 5 on the power play and 9 for 10 on the penalty kill.
Munro, who was also pulled in favor of an extra attacker late in the third period during a power play but returned on a line change after the advantage expired, finished with 15 saves.
The Sound Tigers will host the Providence Bruins this coming Wednesday, March 9th at 7:05 p.m. The game will be web cast live at www.soundtigers.com.
