Sens cruise behind four first period goals

March 5, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release

The Senators came flying out of the gate scoring four first-period goals and setting a franchise record for shots in a period with 28 en route to a 5-2 victory against the Albany River Rats on Saturday night before a sold out crowd at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Binghamton jumped out to a 4-0 lead on first period goals by Brian Pothier, Anton Volchenkov and a pair from captain Chris Kelly.

But Albany would make things interesting briefly with a goal from Aleksandre Suglobov to end the first period and one from Tuomas Pihlman early in the second.

Christoph Schubert ended any hopes of an Albany comeback with his second goal in as many nights at 7:08 of the second period. Jason Spezza earned his fourth assist of the night on the goal.

The B-Sens win, coupled with a Philadelphia loss puts the Senators back in first place in the East Division.

Brian McGrattan added to his league-leading penalty minute total during a brawl that led to the ejection of three players on each team midway through the second period. McGrattan had 26 penalty minutes in the game and now leads the league with 428 this season.

Billy Thompson won his fourth straight game blocking 23 of Albany's 25 attempts. Binghamton finished the game with 47 shots. Ari Ahonen stopped 42 in the losing effort.

Binghamton scored one power-play goal in four opportunities. Albany did not score on two chances.

The Senators will next take on the league-leading Rochester Americans on Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. Game time is 7:05 p.m. with Countdown to Face Off with Grady Whittenburg hitting the air at 6:35 p.m. on 680-WINR.
