Bridgeport Islanders News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 5-0 on the road to the Manchester Monarchs Friday. Manchester was 3 for 9 on the power play, 6 for 6 on the penalty kill and scored a shorthanded goal. The Monarchs have scored at least five goals in all five games they have played this season and have shutout their opponents for the last 125:22 of play.
Manchester opened the scoring on the game's first power play, but it was a Sound Tigers' advantage, as Chris Schmidt intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and raced in alone to score his first goal of the season, unassisted in addition to shorthanded, at the 3:19 mark of the first period.
The Monarchs then used the power play to build a 4-0 lead by the end of the middle frame. Mike Cammalleri scored his fourth goal of the season off assists from Brad Smyth and Dustin Brown at 5:51, Yanick Lehoux notched his team-leading seventh off assists from Tom Kostopoulos and Petr Kanko at 8:35, and Ryan Flinn scored his first off assists from Matt Ryan and Lehoux with 3:16 left in the period. Lehoux and Flinn scored on the advantage.
Kostopoulos scored his first goal of the season on a power-play breakaway 1:13 into the third period off an assist from Lehoux to finish the scoring.
Lehoux was the first star of the game with his fourth three-point effort of the season, Manchester Goaltender Mathieu Garon was the second star with 24 saves for his first shutout of the season, and Schmidt was the third star. Netminder Wade Dubielewicz made 22 saves for the Sound Tigers who were outshot 27-24.
The Sound Tigers will continue a stretch of five straight road games when they visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. in a rematch of last spring's East Division semi-final. The five-game road swing will end when the Sound Tigers visit the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, November 6th and the Portland Pirates on Sunday, November 7th.
