Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â For the fourth time in five games, center Yanick Lehoux led his team with three points as the Manchester Monarchs stayed unbeaten with a satisfying 5-0 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before 8,010 fans on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Lehoux, who had just one three-point game with the Monarchs last season, paced the offensive attack with one goal and two assists. Left wing Chris Schmidt (1-0=1), center Michael Cammalleri (1-0=1), left wing Ryan Flinn (1-0=1) and right wing Tom Kostopoulos (1-1=2) also scored for the Monarchs, who improved to 5-0-0-0. The Monarchs have yet to score less than five goals in a game this season.
The Monarchs, who have yet to trail in a game this season, took a first period lead with a short-handed goal from Schmidt, scored on a breakaway at 3:19. The unassisted short-hander was his fourth in a Monarchs uniform, tying him with former Monarch Steve Kelly for second all-time. Former Monarch Derek Bekar is the Monarchs career leader with eight short-handed goals.
The Monarchs took control of the game with three goals in the middle period. Cammalleri sliced his shot past goaltender Wade Dubielewicz (27 shots, 22 saves) at 5:51 with assists from right wing Brad Smyth and left wing Dustin Brown, Lehoux made it a 3-0 lead with his team-leading seventh goal, scored on the power play with assists from Kostopoulos and left wing Petr Kanko at 8:35, and Flinn collected his first goal of the season with assists from Lehoux and rookie center Matt Ryan on the power play at 16:44.
Kostopoulos closed the scoring with his first goal of the season, scored on the power play just 1:13 into the final frame. Lehoux had the only assist on the play.
The scoring explosion was more than enough for goaltender Mathieu Garon, who improved to 3-0 on the season with 24 saves. The shutout was his first of the season, and it helped extend the Monarchs team shutout streak to 125:22 over the last three games.
The Monarchs return to action when they travel to Springfield to meet the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, October 30 at 4:05 p.m. Saturday's game will be the first of three straight on the road for the Monarchs, who return to the Verizon Wireless Arena to meet the Albany River Rats on Saturday, November 6 at 7:35 p.m. Catch all of the play-by-play action with Ken Cail on the Monarchs Radio Network (WGIR-AM 610, Manchester; WGIN-AM 930, Rochester; WGIP-AM 1540, Exeter; WTSL-AM 1400, Lebanon) and at www.monarchshockey.com.
