Bridgeport Islanders News Release
NORFOLK, VA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, clinched a berth in the 2004 Calder Cup Playoffs Sunday as Goaltender Dieter Kochan stopped 19 shots on goal for his fifth shutout of the season in a 2-0 road win over the Norfolk Admirals.
Last night, the Norfolk did all of the scoring it needed to in a short second-period span. Tonight, the Sound Tigers opened the scoring and took charge with a pair of second-period goals 5:49 apart. First, Derek Bear notched his 22nd of the season on the power play off assists from Kevin Colley and Luke Curtin, his first point as a Sound Tiger, at the 2:32 mark. Then, Wes Goldie scored his first career AHL goal in just his second career AHL game off assists from Graham Bleak and Ben Guide at the 8:21 mark.
The Admirals pulled Netminder Michael Leighton in favor of an extra attacker with 2:08 left in the third period but were unable to score. In fact, Norfolk had to put Leighton back in goal when they took a series of penalties starting at the 18:51 mark.
Bekar was the first star of the game, Goldie was the second, and Kochan was the third. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 7 on the power play while the Admirals were 0 for 6 and had a 19-17 shots on goal advantage.
