Houston Aeros vs. Milwaukee Admirals, 3/28

Five things you absolutely need to know before reading any further –

Aeros centerman Mark Cullen has helped raise $700 for "Sunshine Kids", which helps children struck with cancer and their families. An anonymous donor is giving $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist to the organization. Cullen, who was diagnosed with malignant melanoma last fall, has two and 10 assists since the campaign started March 5. Friday night, Cullen had the game-winning goal and an assist.

The Aeros are 2-for-50 (4.0 percent) on the power play this season against Milwaukee. Houston hasn't scored on 13 opportunities over the last three games versus the Admirals.

Last night's 4-2 win over San Antonio marked the seventh time this season the Aeros have won when not scoring the game's first goal. It also marked Houston's first victory this season when trailing by more than one goal.

The Aeros' magic number to qualify for the post-season is 11 points, a combination of their own points gained and points lost by San Antonio. The magic number could shrink to nine points with a win today, and seven with a victory and a Cincinnati win over the Rampage.

Milwaukee has outscored Houston 11-3 in the first period of their nine meetings this season, with two of the Aeros' goals coming Opening Night. The Aeros have scored first just twice against the Admirals this season.

Admirals at Aeros (Aeros are 26-26-6-1 overall, Aeros lead 14-11-4-1 in Houston)

The teams meet for the 60th time tonight – 31st in Houston.

The Aeros are winless in the last eight meetings overall (0-6-1-1) and last beat the Admirals on Opening Night (October 17), when they earned a 5-1 win at Bradley Center.

Houston's eight-game winless streak against Milwaukee is its longest skid against any opponent. The Aeros are currently 0-4-3-0 in the last seven against Chicago.

Houston is winless in the last four home meetings (0-3-0-1) and hasn't won a home game against Milwaukee in the regular season since March 15, 2003, a 4-2 decision.

The Aeros' longest home winless streak against Milwaukee is five games (0-3-2) from October 16, 1999 to January 17, 2002.

Milwaukee has outscored the Aeros 19-8 in Houston in four games this season.

The Aeros and Admirals skated to a 3-3 tie February 26 in Milwaukee, snapping Houston's five-game regulation losing streak versus Milwaukee. In that game, Rickard Wallin's tie with less than five minutes remaining lifted the Aeros to the deadlock.

Since the teams joined the American Hockey League prior to the 2001-02 season, Houston has a 15-13-2-1 mark versus Milwaukee.

Today is the teams' final meeting of the season.

Tonight: Milwaukee at Houston

Last game – Dan Cavanaugh celebrated his Bobblehead Night with a game-tying goal, and Jordan Krestanovich put Houston ahead 1:20 later in the second period, as the Aeros rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 4-2 win over the San Antonio Rampage in front of 10,275 fans at Toyota Center. Marc Cavosie got the comeback started, Billy Tibbetts chipped in two assists and Kyle Kettles made 18 saves for the Aeros, who are unbeaten in four (3-0-1-0). Jason Beckett added an empty net goal and an assist for Houston.

Scouting the Aeros – Houston, 8-3-2-1 in its last 14, hopes to continue its march towards a Calder Cup playoff spot tonight. The Aeros are still playing without leading scorer Stephane Veilleux (12+26=38), who was recalled to Minnesota February 27. Rickard Wallin (14+17=31) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (5+14=19) have since joined Veilleux with the Wild. Defenseman Travis Roche (8+30=38) has used four points in the last three games to vault into a tie with Veilleux for the team's scoring lead, one up on Kyle Wanvig (23+14=37) and five ahead of Dan Cavanaugh (13+20=33). Last season's Calder Cup Most Valuable Player, goalie Johan Holmqvist, has played 59 of the team's first 75 games, going 23-27-7 with a 2.56 goals against average and three shutouts. Kyle Kettles, who got his first start in 10 games last night, is 4-7-5 with a 2.55 goals against average but has deserved a better fate. In 15 starts, the Aeros have scored 29 goals in front of the rookie netminder.

Scouting the Admirals – Milwaukee has stormed the overall AHL points lead with 94 thanks to just seven regulation losses in the last 34 games (24-7-2-1), despite last night's 4-2 road loss to Chicago. The Admirals are a veteran bunch, led by winger Darren Haydar (21+36=57) and Mathieu Darche (28+27=55). Playmaker Tony Hrkac has chipped in 51 points (18+33=51) in 59 games. The blueline is led by defending Eddie Shore winner and likely 2003-04 favorite Curtis Murphy, who has 46 points (15+31=46) and a league-best plus-38 rating. Brad Tiley has also earned high marks on defense, with 43 points (13+30=43). Promising former first-round pick Brian Finley is 21-14-2 with a 2.36 goals against average, but he's 14-3-1 in his last 18 games. In those 18 contests, he hasn't yielded more than three goals in any game and has lowered his goals against average from 2.73 to 2.36. Veteran Wade Flaherty has added valuable support in front of the cage, sporting a 19-9-3 mark with a 2.05 goals against average. Flaherty was in net last night against the Wolves, meaning Houston will likely see Finley today.

Aeros/Admirals connections

Milwaukee defenseman Curtis Murphy spent the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons with Houston, helping the Aeros win the 2003 Calder Cup title. Murphy notched 101 points (35g, 66a) in 160 games over two seasons with Houston. Murphy was traded to the Nashville organization in exchange for Chris Bala last summer. Bala has since been traded to Colorado.

The Admirals' Jay Henderson was part of the 2003 Aeros' Calder Cup winning team after he was acquired from the Rangers organization for Cory Larose. Henderson posted 11 points (7+4=11) in 22 regular season games and four points (2+2=4) in 23 post-season contests.

The Aeros' Travis Roche (1999-2001) and Milwaukee's Curtis Murphy (1994-98), Tony Hrkac (1984-85, 1986-87) and Bryan Lundbohm (1998-2001) each went to the University of North Dakota.

Houston's Stephane Veilleux (recalled to Minnesota) and the Admirals' Simon Gamache were two of the leading scorers for QMJHL Val d'Or from 1999-2001.

Milwaukee's Ray Schultz played for Houston head coach Todd McLellan in 2000-01 in Cleveland (IHL). Schultz was also a teammate of the Aeros' Jan Vodrazka in Kansas City (IHL) in 1999-2000.

Houston defenseman Jason Beckett was an Admiral for most of two seasons, 2001-02 and 2002-03. Beckett had 18 points (4g+14=18) and 186 penalty minutes in 92 games with Milwaukee.

The Aeros' Jeff Hoggan played three collegiate seasons at Nebraska-Omaha with Milwaukee's Greg Zanon.

Aeros goalie Kyle Kettles was originally drafted by Nashville in 1999 (seventh round, No. 205 overall), the same draft that saw the Predators take Brian Finley No. 6 overall.

Houston defenseman Erik Reitz played two seasons (1999-2001) with Milwaukee goalie Brian Finley at OHL Barrie.

And down the stretch they come – Houston will play eight games over the final three weeks of the season, including four big matchups in six days this week. Each of the Aeros' five remaining games is against the West Division. Houston is 20-23-9-2 against the West this season, including a 10-9-3-1 mark in the last 23 games.

Aeros look for points in five straight –

Houston, coming off last night's 4-2 win over San Antonio, is 8-3-2-1 over its last 14 games (.679 win pct). The Aeros are unbeaten in four straight (3-0-1-0), three shy of their season-high.

Houston has 13 wins in its last 43 games (13-18-10-2) and is three games above the .500 mark the last 53 games (22-19-10-2).

The Aeros' 13-game winless streak (0-5-7-1) December 27-January 23 was five more than their previous franchise record eight-game streak (0-6-1-1), November 20-December 3 of this season.

Houston ran off a season-high seven straight games without a loss (3-0-4-0) December 20-January 2, including four straight ties December 27-January 2.

The Aeros won six straight December 5-17, outscoring their opponents 18-6 in the process.

In the season's first 20 games, Houston allowed a league-worst 3.40 goals per game. In the last 55 games, the Aeros have yielded just 2.51 goals per game. The defensive streak has helped Houston move out of the basement to 2.73 goals against per game, tied for 16th in the AHL.

Aeros, Ducks, Rampage, Grizzlies in a playoff dog-fight – Fourth-place Houston has 70 points, five more than Cincinnati, seven better than Utah and 12 up on San Antonio in the West Division. Cincinnati, which has three games in hand on the Aeros, tied Cleveland 3-3 last night and is in San Antonio today. Utah, which along with Houston has played 75 games, finished off a sweep of Grand Rapids with a 4-3 win last night and is off today. San Antonio, which has six games in hand on Houston, plays host to Cincinnati today in game three of a stretch of 13 games in 17 days. The top five teams in the West make the playoffs, with the fourth- and fifth-place team playing a three-game qualifying series at the higher seed. Home ice will be important, since the four teams chasing the final two playoff spots are a combined 42 games under .500 on the road. The Aeros' magic number to qualify for the post-season is 11 points, a combination of their points gained and points lost by San Antonio.

Home cookin' – The Aeros are unbeaten in five straight (4-0-1-0) at home, and have also gone 8-3-1-0 in the last 12 at Toyota Center since falling 3-1 to Cincinnati January 27. Houston plays four of its final five games at home, including two next week against the Ducks, who enter today's play five points behind the Aeros for fourth place in the West.

The Aeros are averaging 3.56 goals per game over the last nine home games, in which they are 6-2-1-0.

Houston started off its first season in Toyota Center just 2-6-1-1 but has improved to 17-11-6-2 at its new home. In the last 26 Toyota Center games, the Aeros have only five regulation losses and are 15-5-5-1.

Houston's season-best, nine-game home unbeaten streak was snapped January 8 in a 1-0 overtime loss to Hartford.

"O" exploding –

The Aeros are averaging 3.18 goals per game in the last 17 games to improve to 2.48 goals per game, 17th in the AHL.

The Aeros have scored five goals in five of their last 13 games, including two straight last Sunday and Tuesday.

Houston has scored two goals or less in 43 of 75 games (57.3 percent) this season.

That's more like it – Coming into this weekend, the Aeros had yielded 37.7 shots over their last three games. That total was nearly 10 shots over Houston's season average (28.1), which ranks in the top 10 of the AHL. The Aeros have responded over the last two games, allowing just 45 total shots (22.5 average), including only 20 (and three in the third period) last night against San Antonio.

Houston within five of .500 mark for first time since February 11 – The Aeros have won two straight to get within five games of the .500 mark (27-32-12-4) for the first time since February 11, when they tied Chicago to go to 18-23-10-3. Houston's low water mark came at 10 games under .500, and the Aeros were last there February 26 (19-29-11-3). The Aeros could finish at the .500 mark with wins in their final five games.

Aeros finish off final three-in-three – When playing either their second or third straight games this season, the Aeros have 10 wins in 29 games (10-12-5-2). Houston is 8-9-3-2 when playing the second of two straight games, while it is 2-3-2-0 when finishing off the third game in three nights. The Aeros wrap up their eighth and final three-in-three of the season today.

Who are these guys? – This is the time of the year where teams are supposed to come back together for the post-season. However, the Aeros won last night with a lineup that consisted of six players that weren't with the team when March began, due to call-ups and injuries. The additions came up big as well. Jordan Krestanovich, obtained from Colorado at the trade deadline, tallied last night's game-winner, his second goal in three games. Billy Tibbetts had two assists and energized the Toyota Center crowd with his first fight in his third game with Houston. He has three assists total. Meanwhile, ECHL Louisiana callups Ben Storey and Maxime Fortunus each added an assist. Frederic Cloutier backed up Kyle Kettles. Another newcomer will join the fray today as well – 6-foot-6 defenseman Chad Starling is expected to make his Aeros debut. Starling was recalled from ECHL Peoria late last night.

Beckett enjoys first two-point night in three-plus seasons – Defenseman Jason Beckett posted his third career two-point game last night, and his first since December 30, 2000, in his rookie season with Philadelphia against Hershey. Beckett, whose four goals this season are an AHL high, has certainly taken advantage of his increased ice time lately. Beckett has three points (2-1=3) in his last three games, and he has three goals in March after only one from October-February.

A tale of two goalies – Tonight's likely goaltending matchup features a pair of netminders drafted in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the same team – the Nashville Predators. Milwaukee's Brian Finley was drafted No. 6 overall and was the only goalie picked in the top 21 selections. Houston's Kyle Kettles, meanwhile, was selected No. 205 overall in the seventh round. Kettles never signed with Nashville, instead inking a free agent pact with Minnesota in the summer of 2002 after his junior career ended.

Hoggan's streak snapped –

Aeros right winger Jeff Hoggan had his five-game goal streak snapped last night. The run was three better than his previous career-best, and he added two helpers in the streak.

Hoggan's five-game goal streak tied Kyle Wanvig for the team season-high, and Wanvig and several others for the AHL season-high.

The rugged winger has 33 points (19+14=33), and his 19 goals are second on the team. In his rookie season in 2002-03, Hoggan totaled just 11 points (6+5=11).

In his last 17 games, Hoggan has posted a negative plus-minus rating just once, and he is plus-14 in that span to move to plus-three on the season.

Hoggan is tied for second on the team with three game-winning goals.

The Aeros are 16-5-5-2 when Hoggan notches a point and 9-5-3-2 when he scores a goal.

Wanvig reaches 20-goal mark – Aeros right wing Kyle Wanvig has gotten to the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his pro career. Wanvig, who scored his 20th February 28 against San Antonio, picked up No. 23 Tuesday against Utah. Wanvig has 38 total points between Houston and Minnesota, and 37 alone with the Aeros (23+14=37). Wanvig's previous career-high for goals was 14 combined (13 with Houston) last season, when he had 30 points, 29 with the Aeros.

Kettles gets 25th pro win –

Rookie goalie Kyle Kettles made 18 saves last night for his 25th professional win, counting 21 last season with ECHL Louisiana. Kettles was making his first start in 10 games.

Kettles snapped an eight appearance winless streak (0-3-5) by making 26 saves in a 5-2 win in San Antonio February 27. Kettles made a season-best 34 saves March 5 but fell 3-1 to Grand Rapids.

Kettles was 2-0-4 with a 0.95 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in six starts from December 23-January 17, dropping his goals against average from 3.65 to 2.19.

The netminder picked up his first AHL shutout by making 20 saves in a January 9 game versus Worcester. Unfortunately for Kettles, his team didn't score either and he had to settle for a tie.

The Aeros scored just 12 goals in his first 10 games this season, but they have 16 goals in his last five starts.

Kettles 0-1-1 versus Admirals – Kyle Kettles is 0-1-1 with a no decision in three appearances against Milwaukee, sporting a 3.07 goals against average. Frederic Cloutier made 35 saves in a 4-3 loss at Milwaukee February 6. He is 0-2-0 with a 3.55 goals against average in two career starts against the Admirals.

Finley 6-1-0 in last seven against Houston – The Admirals' Brian Finley is 6-4-1 with a 2.56 goals against average and a .920 save percentage in 12 career games versus Houston. He is an improved 6-1-0 with a 2.71 goals against average in seven games against the Aeros this season after beginning his career 0-3-1. Veteran Wade Flaherty is 5-5-1 with a no decision and a 3.06 goals against average in 12 career games against Houston. This season, he's 1-0-1 with a nifty 1.92 goals against average.

The youth shall lead them – Houston's "kids" are leading the way in 2003-04. Through 75 games, roughly half of the Aeros' scoring has come from players in their first or second year in the North American pro game. Of Houston's 503 scoring points, 251 (49.9 percent) have come from players in either their first or second season in North America, while 251 (49.9 percent) have come from players born in 1980 or after. Five of the team's eight top scorers were born during the Reagan administration.

Career highs all around – You'd be hard pressed to find an Aero who hasn't set at least one AHL career-high in 2003-04. Among them: Johan Holmqvist (59 games played, 3467 minutes, 2.56 goals against average); Erik Reitz (19 assists, 23 points); Zbynek Michalek (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points); Marc Cavosie (10 goals, 20 assists, 30 points); Dan Cavanaugh (21 assists, 34 points); Kevin Mitchell (5 goals, 16 assists, 21 points); Jeff Hoggan (19 goals, 14 assists, 33 points); Stephane Veilleux (13 AHL goals tie career high, 25 assists, 38 points); Kyle Wanvig (23 goals, 36 points); Jason Beckett (4 goals, 146 PIM's).

Aeros still winless in OT – The Aeros, winless at 0-4-12 in overtime, have played just four extra sessions since needing overtime in eight of 10 games from December 27-January 17. Houston is the lone AHL team without an overtime win after Utah won twice in late February in the extra session, and just one team (Cleveland) has only one overtime win. The last teams to go through a season without an overtime win were Hamilton and Hartford last season. The Aeros went 8-3-7 in overtime in 2002-03, second in the league in extra session wins (Chicago, 11). The Aeros' 12 ties are one off the AHL lead (Portland) and still six short of the AHL/overtime era record, set in 1997-98 by St. John's. Grand Rapids (6-0-8) and San Antonio (7-0-8) are without a loss in overtime this season.

Aeros have first goal in 10 of 13 games – Houston has scored the game's first goal in 10 of its last 13 games. The Aeros are 20-8-6-2 overall when scoring first.

But when not scoring first... - The Aeros are 7-24-5-2 when allowing the game's first goal and picked up their first road win in such situations (1-16-4-0) March 21 in Norfolk. The game marked the first time all season Houston has trailed on the road at any point in a game and emerged victorious. The Aeros trailed 2-0 last night against San Antonio and won, the first time this season they've rallied from two goals down for a win.

Houston has five wins when allowing more than one goal - The Aeros are an unbeaten in regulation 22-0-3-1 when allowing one or zero goals this season, and they five four wins (5-32-9-3) when yielding two or more.

Not comeback artists – Houston is one of four AHL teams without a win when trailing after two periods (0-26-6-1). The Aeros became the last team to record a win when trailing after one period (1-22-3-2) when they rallied for a 5-3 win last Sunday in Norfolk. Last season, the Aeros were second in the AHL with six wins when trailing after two periods. Grand Rapids led the circuit with seven.

Penalty kill update –

The Aeros' overall 85.4 percent penalty kill rate (292-342) is 15th in the AHL, after spending much of season in the upper half of the top 10.

Houston killed off its first 31 shorthanded chances this season. Since then, opponents are 50-for-311 (16.1 percent) on the power play.

Opponents are 15-for-76 (19.7 percent) on the power play over the last 17 games and have scored 21 man-advantage goals in the last 24 games.

Houston has allowed seven power play goals on 25 chances (25.0 percent goal rate) in the last five games.

The Aeros have yielded no power play goals in 38 of their 75 games, and have points in all but nine of those games (16-9-9-4).

Milwaukee ranks 14th in the league at 15.1 percent on the power play.

The Admirals are 6-of-24 on the power play (25.0 percent) in their last five games.

Milwaukee is 6-for-52 (11.5 percent) on the power play versus the Admirals, with Timofei Shishkanov leading the way with two goals. The Admirals have scored one power play goal in each of the last four meetings.

Power play update –

Houston enters tonight's game 52 of 411 on the power play (12.7 percent), tied for 20th among 28 AHL teams.

The Aeros have gone 39-for-268 (14.6 percent) since Matt Foy snapped a streak of 37 straight unsuccessful power plays December 5, raising their percentage from a season-low 8.3 to 12.7.

The Aeros are 4-for-37 (11.8 percent) on the power play over their last seven games.

Houston's 411 power plays are the most in the AHL, 15 more than second-place. The Aeros also led the league in 2002-03 with 514 chances.

The Aeros have only seven wins, including last night, in 37 games (7-22-7-1) when not scoring a power-play goal.

Milwaukee has killed off just 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) shorthanded chances over the last five games.

The Admirals are 14th in the league on the penalty kill at 85.5 percent.

The Aeros are just 2-for-50 (4.0 percent) on the power play this season against Milwaukee. Rickard Wallin scored November 15, and Marc Cavosie tallied February 6. Houston hasn't scored on 13 opportunities over the last three games.

Houston at 75-game mark – The Aeros passed the official midway point of the season with a 14-15-8-3 mark and now sport a 27-32-12-4 record. Houston can still finish at the .500 mark by winning each of its final five games. Below is a breakdown of Houston's season so far in 10-game segments.
