Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks scored 15 combined goals during games on Friday and Saturday; no Hawk had more points than Hank Sorensen who was named the United States Hockey League Defenseman of the Week on Monday.

Just 1:15 into Friday's road game against the Lincoln Stars, Sorensen was already stirring Waterloo's offense. It was the rebound from his shot which Wyatt Schingoethe put into the net for the first Hawks goal. Waterloo would go on to an 8-0 victory. Later in the period, a similar situation led to a Matej Blumel rebound put-back for Sorensen's second assist. Waterloo's five goals in the opening 20 minutes are the most by any USHL team in any first period this season.

In the second, Sorensen extended the lead still farther with a power play goal. It capped the fourth three-point performance of his USHL career. Three of those games have been this season against Lincoln.

Saturday, the Hawks and Sioux City Musketeers were tied 3-3 in the third period when Sorensen dealt the puck to Vladislav Firstov in the neutral zone. The rookie forward moved up the ice to score the go-ahead and ultimately game-winning goal as Waterloo went on to a 7-3 victory. The assist was Sorensen's fourth point of the weekend. He also tied with defensemate Mason Palmer for a team-best +6 plus/minus differential during the two games.

For the year, Sorensen has seven goals and 26 assists. Both figures are already career bests through just 42 games. In total, he has made 137 regular season appearances for the Black Hawks with 70 points (16 goals, 54 assists).

Sorensen is the second Waterloo player to be named USHL Defenseman of the Week in 2018/19, joining James Marooney. In total, this is the fourth time in 2018/19 that a Black Hawk has been named a USHL Player of the Week at any position.
