Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves jumped ahead early and took down the Bowie Baysox 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium, winning their first road series of the season.
The âWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Bowie starter Rick Zagone. Brandon Douglas doubled off the wall in center with one out and moved to third as Rawley Bishop reached on an error. Bryan Pounds singled to right, scoring Douglas for a 1-0 lead. With runners on the corners and Francisco Martinez hitting, Pounds took off for second and was caught in a pickoff. The Baysox tagged out Pounds but on the throw to the plate, Bishop slid around the tag for a 2-0 lead. Martinez then singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch with Michael Bertram hitting. Bertram singled home Martinez for a 3-0 lead.
In the second, John Murrian doubled to the wall in left with one out and came home to score on a two-out single from Rawley Bishop for a 4-0 lead.
Erie added to the lead in the top of the third when Martinez crushed his fifth home run of the season over the wall in left-center for a 5-0 edge. Martinez, who would later leave the game with an injury, finished the day with three hits.
Bowie's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth against Erie starter Mark Sorensen. Caleb Joseph led off with a double, advanced on a Buck Britton groundout and scored on a Billy Rowell groundout. It would be the only blemish on the day for Sorensen.
The âWolves added an insurance run in the ninth inning off of reliever Nick Bierbrodt. With one out, Jamie Johnson walked. With two away, Bishop sent a rocket down the left field line, plating Johnson from first for a 6-1 Erie lead. It was the sixth double for Bishop and his fifth game with two or more RBI.
Austin Wood closed the game for the âWolves tossing the final two innings scoreless.
Sorensen (3-2) picks up the win and is 2-0 with a no-decision in his last three starts. The righty allowed a run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He has worked at least six innings in his last three starts and has allowed just two earned runs over his last 22 innings pitched.
The âWolves will look for their third consecutive win on Monday night as the club travels to play the Richmond Flying Squirrels...7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Casey Crosby (1-2, 3.79 ERA) takes the mound for the âWolves against RHP Ryan Verdugo (2-0, 3.12 ERA).
