May 22, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(New Britain, CT)-Joel Carreno and Alan Farina combined on a one-hit shutout and the Fisher Cats earned a split of Sunday's doubleheader 4-0 at New Britain Stadium.
New Britain took the opener 6-5 on a walk-off two-run double by Joe Benson.
It was the second time in his last three starts that Carreno has pitched in a one-hitter. On May 11, he combined on a one-hitter in beating Portland. On Sunday, he improved to 3-3, working six innings of one-hit ball. He walked five and struck out seven. The only New Britain hit came with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single to centerfield by DH Chris Herrmann. Farina pitched a perfect seventh innings in relief.
The Fisher Cats (27-15) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a solo home run by John Tolisano off New Britain starter and loser Steve Hirschfeld (3-1). Hirschfeld worked six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out six.
New Hampshire added a run in the top of the sixth inning on a walk to Darin Mastroianni, a sacrifice by Adeiny Hechavarria and a single by Mike McDade.
Yan Gomes drilled a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, his third of the season, after a single by Ricardo Nanita for a 4-0 lead.
In the opener, New Britain (25-16) prevailed 6-5 on a walk-off double by Joe Benson in the bottom of the seventh inning. Steve Singleton led off the frame with a base hit to center and Chris Herrmann followed by beating out a bunt when reliever Evan Crawford (1-1) slipped trying to field the ball. Benson then doubled off the left field wall scoring the tying and winning runs.
The win spoiled a nice comeback by the Fisher Cats after they took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning when Callix Crabbe (1-for-2, 3 RBI) singled home two runs with the bases loaded off eventual winning pitcher Tyler Robertson (3-2).
The Rock Cats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Herrmann walked, Chris Parmelee singled and Evan Bigley was hit by a pitch. Yangervis Solarte singled to score Hermann but the inning ended with Parmelee thrown out at the plate trying to score a second run.
New Hampshire went ahead with three runs in the top of the second inning. Moises Sierra walked and Travis d'Arnaud singled him to third. Craig Stansberry doubled off the wall in left field scoring both runners for a 2-1 lead. He moved to third on the throw to the plate. Crabbe then grounded to first but the Rock Cats failed in an attempt to nail Stansberry at the plate to make it 3-1.
New Britain scored in the second against Fisher Cats starter Chad Beck. Michael Hollimon walked and scored on a double by Steve Singleton to make it 3-2.
Hollimon also gave the Rock Cats a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, drilling a two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole and Deibinson Romero was hit by a pitch.
The Fisher Cats took the lead in the top of the sixth inning against New Britain reliever Tyler Robertson. Mike McDade singled, d'Arnaud (3-for-3) singled and Nanita walked to load the bases. After Stansberry popped out, Crabbe singled to center, scoring McDade and d'Arnaud to make it 5-4.
Beck worked 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. He walked two and struck out five.
The Fisher Cats open a four-game series in Portland on Monday night at 6:00pm. RHP Zach Stewart (3-2, 4.24) will start for New Hampshire against RHP Stephen Fife (4-2, 2.57) for the Sea Dogs. Radio coverage with Bob Lipman begins at 5:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
The Fisher Cats return home on Friday, May 27 at 7:05pm to play the New Britain Rock Cats. An Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the game and the first 1,000 fans will receive a free Fisher Cats T-Shirt courtesy of Dead River Company. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
