CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - A late rally fell short for the Tennessee Smokies as they fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Field.

Hung-Wen Chen took the loss for Tennessee, only his first this season as he falls to 3-1. The righty pitched five and a third innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Lookouts starter Mario Alvarez picked up his third win of the season with a six inning effort where he only allowed one Tennessee run on four hits.

Matt Spencer, Tony Campana, and Starlin Castro all had multi-hit games at the plate for the Smokies as each man went 2-4 in the second Tennessee loss of the series.

For the first time in the series the Lookouts took the lead first. A solo home run by Corey Smith opened the scoring for Chattanooga in the bottom of the second for the game's first run.

Chattanooga scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Scott Van Slyke hit an RBI double that scored Elian Herrera to put the score at 2-0 before a Smith groundout scored Van Slyke to put the Lookouts ahead 3-0.

Morristown native Spencer's hot hitting helped Tennessee strike back in the top of the fourth. His single scored Robinson Chirinos to get the Smokies a run closer at 3-1.

The game remained 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Trayvon Robinson hit a solo homer off Tennessee's Ryan Buchter to extend the Lookouts lead to 4-1.

Tennessee could only muster one run in the top of the eighth, as a Blake Lalli groundout scored Castro to get the Smokies within two runs of the Lookouts at 4-2.

The Smokies fought hard all the way in the top of the ninth. The rally began with a one-out double by Steve Clevenger. Nate Samson and Campana drew two-out walks to load the bases with Castro coming to the plate. Baseball America's top Cubs prospect hit an RBI single that scored Clevenger to make it a one run game at 4-3.

However the rally ended with the bases loaded as Ty Wright grounded out to second base to give Chattanooga their second victory of the series at 4-3.

The clubs will play the rubber match and finale of the series on Monday night in Chattanooga. Tennessee will start right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkxs (0-1, 4.09) against Chattanooga's Jesus Castillo (2-1, 1.48).
