Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala, - Bryan Shaw didn't allow an earned run over 5.2 innings, but he has to settle for a no-decision while the BayBears' bullpen secures the victory on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, a 4-2 win over the Carolina Mudcats.
Shaw was touched up for an unearned run in the top of the second, but it could have been a lot worse. Brandon Yarbrough started the frame be reaching on an error by second baseman Gerson Montilla. A single and sac bunt/fielder's choice loaded the bases with no outs for Jose Castro, who reached on an infield single to put the Mudcats (7-17) in front.
Shaw buckled down from there and forced Daryl Thompson to fly to center before striking out Kris Negron. With two away and the bags still full, Dave Sappelt bounced out to Bryan Byrne at first, ending the Mudcat rally.
With Thompson cruising through the first four innings, the BayBears (11-13) finally got to him in the fifth as Jake Elmore led off with a single before Montilla doubled down the third-base line. Left fielder Sean Henry booted the ball into the corner which allowed Elmore to score. Two batters later, Shaw reached on a fielder's choice to score Montilla as Negron's throw to the plate from short was just late.
Shaw left with the lead still in tact although Carolina had a runner on third with one out in the sixth. A line out to right from Michael Griffin recorded the second out while Kyler Newby (1-1) came in to get the last out as Castro popped out to right.
Newby surrendered a home run in the seventh to Negron which tied the game, but it didn't stay tied for long as the BayBears picked up two in the bottom of the seventh. A walk and error put two men on while Jake Wald's bloop hit broke the tie by sending Byrne to the plate. Elmore scored on a pinch-hit single by Ricardo Sosa.
Reid Mahon (S, 1) replaced Newby for the last two frames and went by without giving up a hit or a run.
