Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports got down early on Monday night, but shut down the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes over the next eight innings. The Quakes scored two runs in the first but Stockton scored the final four runs of the game in a 4-2 win to open a three-game series at Banner Island Ballpark.
Ports starter Brett Grave (6-8) gave up four singles in the first inning that led to a pair of runs for the Quakes. Noah Perio and Brandon Trinkwan each had an RBI single to give the Quakes an early 2-0 advantage.
After the first inning, Graves would not allow the Quakes another multi-hit inning. Graves pitched around a single in the second, third and sixth, at one point setting down seven consecutive batters. Graves would earn his second straight victory, going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while matching a season-high with six strikeouts.
Stockton's first run came in the third off Quakes starter Michael Boyle (0-1). Argenis Raga doubled to left to open the inning and scored two batters later on an RBI single by B.J. Boyd to cut the Ports deficit to 2-1.
The Ports vaulted in front in the fourth. With runners at second and third and two out, Richie Martin hit a fly ball toward the right field line. Quakes right fielder Ariel Sandoval lost the ball in the lights and had it drop in front of him, a two-run double that gave the Ports a 3-2 lead.
Boyle would pitch through the sixth inning but suffer the loss in his California League debut. He allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out eight.
Stockton added an insurance run in the eighth when Sandber Pimentel led off with a homer to right, his 18th of the season, to make it a 4-2 contest. It was the only run allowed by Quakes reliever Adam Bray in his two innings of relief.
Stockton's bullpen worked three perfect innings in relief of Graves as Ports pitching combined to retire the final 11 Quakes batters of the game. Koby Gauna pitched an inning-and-two-thirds while Cody Stull (SV, 1) tossed a perfect inning-and-a-third to pick up his first save of the season. Stull struck out three of the four batters he faced.
The Ports and Quakes play the middle game of their three-game series on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. James Naile (1-0, 5.56 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by left-hander and former Ports pitcher Brett Anderson (0-0, 3.00 ERA) who is tentatively scheduled to pitch on a Major League rehab assignment. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
