Bakersfield Blaze Game Recap 08-01-16: Steamtrain Bako; Blaze Thwomp
August 2, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The assault began early, as the Bakersfield Blaze buckled their straps en route five innings en route to a cruising 12-4 win over the rival San Jose Giants on Dollar Monday in Bakersfield.
The fun began early, though the Blaze did not fully pull away until the middle innings. In the 1st, MLB rehabbing reliever Evan Scribner worked a scoreless top half, and Jay Baum slugged a three-run homer off of Giants starter Jason Forjet to set the tone.
The Giants returned the favor with a four-spot in the 2nd to take a short-lived lead, but it was all Bako from there.
A run in the home half of the 2nd tied it up and ended the day for Forjet. A run in the 3rd gave the Blaze a lead they would not relinquish. Two in the 4th pushed Bakersfield in front by three runs, and the Giants fell apart in the 5th, allowing four Blaze runs and Bako took a commanding 11-4 lead.
Meanwhile, after a rocky first inning of work, Zack Littell (W, 5-0) settled in, going 6.0 innings to pick up another win, beating San Jose for the second straight start, and retiring 11 batters in a row between the 3rd and 7th innings.
Braden Bishop finished the scoring for Bakersfield with a solo homer in the 9th.
Carlos Diaz (L, 0-2) took the loss for the Giants, giving up three runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
Darin Gillies pitched the 8th and 9th for Bakersfield, securing the easy win.
Offensively, Jay Baum paced the Blaze, reaching base four times and driving in four runs. Eight of nine starters reached base safely, and after scoring just four earned runs over the first three games on the homestand, the Blaze have plated 19 total runs in the last two games.
The series with San Jose continues for two more days, with games on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm. Gates open at 6:30pm, and the Blaze broadcast can be found at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call. *Dan Besbris*
