Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers defeated the High Desert Mavericks for the first time this season on Monday at San Manuel Stadium with an 8-5 decision. The Mavericks had beaten the Sixers in the first 15 meetings of the clubs in 2016 but the 66ers got strong starting pitching and early offense to get in the win column and now have won four-of-five games on the current homestand.
The Sixers opened the scoring against High Desert starter Tyler Davis (4-5) in the second when Jared Foster and Zach Houchins each singled. Jeff Boehm then smacked the first of his two doubles to send Foster home. Roberto Baldoquin followed with an RBI hit to make it 2-0 and Ayendy Perez' sac fly gave Inland Empire (37-71, 14-24) a 3-0 lead. The 66ers added two more in the third when Foster connected on a two run shot out to left. The long-ball was his third of the season and made it 5-0.
The Mavericks (64-43, 21-16) got a run in the fourth on Jairo Beras' tape-measure homer out to left to make it 5-1 but Inland Empire responded with three more in the bottom of the frame when Boehm tagged his second double of the night and Baldoquin walked. A Perez sac-bunt set up Michael Hermosillo's 2-RBI single for a 7-1 lead. Foster struck again with his third hit of the night as his RBI single made it 8-1. Foster had three hits, the homer and three RBI with a steal in the game.
Inland Empire's starter Alex Klonowski (8-11) gave up a two run homer to Scott Heineman in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-3. Klonowski went seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits with two hit batters and five Ks.
The Mavs got closer in the eight with a pair of runs but Eric Alonzo struck out the side in the ninth for the Sixers to secure the victory and his first save of the year with Inland Empire.
The series continues Tuesday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
