Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The enthusiastic home crowd at Shaw Park was all the Winnipeg Goldeyes needed to get back to their winning ways.
Before a home opener crowd of 6,771, the Goldeyes (5-6) put together a complete effort to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries (5-7) 5-3 Tuesday night.
The win is Winnipeg's second in their last seven games and gives the Goldeyes a chance to win their second series of the season Wednesday night.
The Goldeyes got the board early, as Casey Haerther singled in Casio Grider in the bottom of the first inning. After Sioux Falls tied the game in the top of the second, Luis Alen singled in Aaron Baker to restore Winnipeg's one-run lead.
Sioux Falls tied the game again in the top of the fourth inning, but Winnipeg responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead. Adam Heisler led off with a single, went to third on an Alen single and scored on a Brad Boyer single. Alen then came around to score on a wild pitch.
Nic Jackson stroked a double off the left-centre field fence for Winnipeg's only extra base hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth to cash in Casey Haerther from first base and extend the Goldeyes lead to 5-2.
Goldeyes reliever Raul Rivera gave up an inherited run for starter Matt Jackson in the seventh, but the bullpen was stellar beyond that. Brendan Lafferty pitched a perfect eighth inning and closer Jailen Peguero gave up just one hit in the ninth en route to his second save of the season.
Jackson worked a 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two earned runs and striking out four for his third quality start of the season in as many outings. He improves to 2-1 on the season.
Sioux Falls starter Jeremy Strawn suffers the loss after being tagged for four runs in four innings of work.
Adam Heisler had three hits and two stolen bases to pace the Goldeyes. He now leads the American Association with seven steals this season.
The Goldeyes and Canaries will meet again Wednesday night at Shaw Park for the second of 13 meetings between the two sides this season. Lefty Jonathan Cornelius (0-1, 7.36) will take the ball for Winnipeg and make his home debut. Sioux Falls is scheduled to counter with Miguel Pena (1-1, 2.70). Game time is 7 p.m. 0 0 1 358 2043 Wintergreen Financial Services Ltd.
