Snappers Can't Complete Comeback, Fall to Dragons 5-4
July 16, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
A baserunning gamble in the bottom of the ninth inning backfired for the Beloit Snappers as they fell to the Dayton Dragons 5-4 Wednesday night.
With runners on the corners and two outs, Chih-Fang Pan was caught in a rundown between first and second base, and Branden Cogswell was called out at the plate as he attempted to steal home amidst the action.
The botched final play capped off a night of missed opportunities for the Snappers, as Beloit went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
The Dragons snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory and the Snappers dropped to 7-18 in the second half of the season.
Dylan Covey had his best outing since returning from the DL (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER), but Beloit's poor defense (3 defensive errors) couldn't help out its pitcher, who picked up his eighth loss of the season.
Amir Garrett recorded the win for the Dragons as he pitched five innings, giving up three hits and one earned run.
The Snappers took an early lead in the third inning off an RBI-single from Phil Pohl. B.J. Boyd led off the inning with a double and Pohl capitalized four batters later with a single to right field to score Boyd from third base.
Beloit's lead wouldn't last long as the Dragons tied the game in the following inning. Ronald Bueno led off the fourth inning with a single to right field and Phillip Ervin drove him home with an RBI-double in the next at-bat.
In the fifth inning, three Beloit defensive errors translated into three runs for Dayton as they took a 4-1 advantage. Robert Ramirez began the inning with a single and then reached second base off a throwing error from third baseman Matt Chapman.
Jose Ortiz then reached first base off a catcher's interference error to send Ramirez into scoring position. After Gabriel Rosa was walked, Carlton Daal reached base on a fielder's choice and a Melvin Mercedes throwing error caused two runners to score.
Ronald Bueno drove in the third run of the frame as his single to right field gave the Dragons a 4-1 lead entering the sixth inning.
The Snappers had a great opportunity to cut into Dayton's lead in the sixth inning, as Beloit loaded the bases with no outs. Beloit, however, only converted the runners into one run as Justin Higley and B.J. Boyd struck out to end the sixth frame.
Beloit tacked on another run in the seventh inning as Melvin Mercedes led off the inning with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third base on an error. Chapman provided the RBI as he grounded out to first base to send Mercedes across the plate.
After two shutout innings out of the bullpen from Brendan McCurry (2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 SO) the Snappers had a chance to even the game in the eighth inning, but couldn't convert, once again. Phil Pohl led off the inning with a double but three straight hard-hit lineups to left field ended the inning and stranded Pohl in scoring position.
Dayton added an insurance run in the ninth inning as Carlton Daal sent an RBI-single up the middle to score Ramirez. Joel Seddon hit two batters to load the bases, but the Dragons could only convert one run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mercedes reached base off a single and Cogswell walked to send Mercedes into scoring position. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Chih-Fang Pan provided the RBI-single to score Mercedes and cut the deficit to 5-4.
B.A Vollmuth popped out in the next at-bat and then Cogswell was called out at home on the steal attempt to end the game.
The Snappers and Dragons return to action Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Pohlman Field in the second game of their three-game series.
