Burlington Bees News Release

(Burlington-IA)- A three run fifth inning was enough to propel the Bees past the South Bend Silver Hawks, 3-1, in game one of a three game series in South Bend at Four Winds Field.

After being shutout in the homestand finale, on Monday, the Bees were sat down in order for the first three innings by Sean Fureny.

The Bees' offense got going in the fifth. Stephen McGee and Ryan Dalton kicked off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a Trevor Gretzky sacrifice bunt, Tyler Palmer flew out to left, scoring Stephen McGee, putting the Bees on top 1-0. The next hitter, Erick Salcedo, tripled into the gap in right field, scoring Ryan Dalton, and the Bees led 2-0. Kody Eaves capped off the fifth with a single scoring Erick Salcedo, extending the Bees lead to 3-0.

Silver Hawks' shortstop, Andrew Velazquez, tripled to lead off the sixth inning and came home to score on a ground out by Chuck Taylor, cutting the Bees' lead to 3-1.

Bees' starter Harrison Cooney worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out six.

The Bees' bullpen did the rest, facing a total of 11 hitters, setting them all down in order, as the Bees came away with a 3-1 win in the series opener.

Harrison Cooney (8-4) picked up the win, while South Bend starter Sean Furney (5-5) was charged with the loss. Alan Busenitz (12) worked two scoreless innings, earning the save.

The Burlington Bees (51-43) and the South Bend Silverhawks (56-38) continue the three game series on Thursday at 6:05 PM Central Time. Yency Almonte makes the start for the Bees.
