Dayton Dragons News Release
Beloit, Wisc.-Carlton Daal collected three hits and drove in two runs as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Beloit Snappers 5-4 on Wednesday night. The Dragons snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and improved their record against Western Division teams to 10-2 on the year.
The game had an unusual ending. The Dragons led 5-4 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with Beloit runners at first and third. With Dragons reliever Alejandro Chacin in the stretch, the Beloit runner at first base, Chih-Fang Pan, broke for second. Chacin ran toward Pan and trapped him between first and second. As the Dragons executed a rundown, the runner at third, Branden Cogswell, broke for the plate. Dragons first baseman Robert Ramirez saw Cogswell release for home and fired the ball to catcher Jose Ortiz, who tagged Cogswell on a close play for the final out of the game.
The Dragons broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth, taking advantage of three Beloit errors in the inning, and a two-out run-scoring single by Ronald Bueno that capped off the inning to make it 4-1. Beloit scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3.
In the top of the ninth, Daal delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to give the Dragons a 5-3 lead. Chacin entered the game to start the bottom of the ninth and retired the first hitter before allowing an infield single, a walk, and a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with one out. Pan then lined a single to left to drive in one run and move the tying run to third. Chacin ran the count to 1-2 on the next hitter before Beloit attempted the unsuccessful double steal to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Amir Garrett (4-5) had a good night to earn the win, allowing just one run in five innings. He surrendered three hits and walked three while striking out five. Chacin earned his ninth save, allowing one run in the ninth.
The Dragons finished with nine hits. Daal led the way with three hits. Bueno and Robert Ramirez each had two hits. Phillip Ervin had an RBI double.
The Dragons (11-14) meet the Snappers (7-18) again on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). Sal Romano (5-9, 4.01) will start for the Dragons against Beloit's Kyle Finnegan (6-6, 3.34). The next home game is Wednesday, July 23 vs. Quad Cities at Fifth Third Field.
All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
