LANSING, Mich. - Shane Dawson was nearly untouchable as the Lansing Lugnuts (13-12, 45-49) rolled to an 8-4 win over the Kane County Cougars (17-8, 62-33) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Lansing took the opener of the three-game set with Kane County, beginning a stretch of twelve consecutive games against Midwest League Western Division opponents.

In his best start as a member of the Lugnuts, Dawson (Win, 3-5) baffled the Cougars through six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

The Lansing offense gave Dawson an early cushion. Right fielder Derrick Loveless hit an RBI triple in the first inning, and first baseman Matt Dean brought him in the score with a groundout to open a 2-0 lead.

After a sacrifice fly by Dean to extend the lead in the fifth, shortstop Dawel Lugo, who finished the night 4-for-4, clubbed a two-run home run against Kane County starter Juan Paniagua (Loss, 6-4) to put the Lugnuts ahead 5-0.

Lansing kept the offense rolling in the sixth with consecutive RBI hits by Mike Reeves, David Harris and Loveless, opening an 8-0 advantage over the Cougars.

Kane County rallied for three runs against Lansing reliever Roberto Espinosa in the seventh and eighth innings to close the deficit.

After allowing a run in the ninth, Scott Silverstein recorded the final outs to close the Lansing win.

Harris went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Loveless had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Lugo and Dean each had two RBIs.

The Lugnuts and Cougars play the second of the three-game set on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Lansing lefty Brent Powers (2-3, 6.46) starts on the mound, countered by Kane County right-hander Duane Underwood (4-2, 2.59). Enjoy $2 beers, $2 sodas and craft beer specials, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
