Scoring six runs in the first two innings the Calgary Vipers went on to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 7-4 in the back half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with four runs and added two more in the second to take both halves on the twin bill. With the victory the Snakes have won six consecutive contests and improve to 6-1 on the second half along with 29-21 overall on the Golden Baseball League season.
Dusty Gober (6-1) received the win after allowing four runs in five innings while Claudio Galva (10) recorded the save by retiring all four batters he faced.
Yuma scored right away in the top of the first inning as Eric Scriven singled, stole second base, and Jonel Pacheco singled him home for a 1-0 lead.
Calgary answered in the bottom of the frame when Jonny Kaplan singled, Brent Metheny walked, Kaplan advanced to third base on a throwing error, Julio Ramirez tied the game with a sacrifice fly, Drew Miller was intentionally walked, Caonabo Cosme walked to load the bases, Metheny scored on a passed ball, and Jorge Mejia plated two runs with a triple for a 4-1 advantage.
The Vipers added to the lead in the second as Guillermo Reyes walked, Metheny singled, Ramirez walked to load the bases, and Miller drove in two with a base hit for a 6-1 score.
The Scorpions got a run back in the fourth inning when Bubba Garcia, Franklin Lopez, and Jesus Gomez all singled for a 6-2 game.
Calgary got that tally back in the bottom of the frame as Metheny walked followed by singles from Miller and Cosme for a 7-2 lead.
Yuma made the score close at 7-4 in the sixth when Jose Rodriguez singled, Lopez doubled, Johny Celis singled in one, and Peeter Ramos collected a RBI double.
The Vipers conclude this three-game series against the Yuma Scorpions in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Wednesday July 21st at 7:05 PM MDT for Weiner Wednesday with hotdogs sold for $1.00.
Calgary welcomes the Edmonton Capitals on Friday July 23rd at 7:05 PM MDT, Saturday July 24th and Sunday July 25th at 1:35 PM MDT, and Monday July 26th at 7:05 PM MDT for Paint the Park Pink weekend. On Saturday the Vipers will also host "Saskatchewan Shines! Rider Day at the Park".
